We had a great sever here. The menu itself is small but everyone enjoyed it. The meat tray is good. I would like it to have more cheese but the Jerky is to die for. The roast beef was a winner.
The overall food experience is good, it’s not great. We found the food under seasonded, perhaps the cooks are not tasting as they are putting out food. It’s a good one time visit, nothing really makes you want to come back.
Went to Charcut for lunch and had their one stop lunch. Its always good and a great value for $16, you receive their sandwich of the day on focaccia, soup of the day, pickle, a good helping of parmesan fries, and a cookie thats already in a brown bag to take back to your desk. Its perfect if you want to go somewhere nicer for lunch, while still ensuring that you will get back to the office in a reasonable amount of time. And the food is always good at Charcut as long as youre in the mood for meat 😉
I have been to Charcut three times now. Each time my opinion of the restaurant lessens. My first meal there was outstanding. I remember a bone in pork chop served on cheddar grits. The meat was perfect and the grits like nothing I have ever had before. The next time we visited, the menu had changed. It didn’t seem nearly as enticing. My wife and I shared a half chicken, poutine and kale salad. The sides were good. Particularly the poutine. However, the chicken was over cooked, dry and bland. On Canada Day, we decided to give it another try. Again, the menu had changed. Again, not as appetizing as the first visit. My wife decided on the steak and potatoes while I chose an 8oz sausage burger with fries. The steak was fine. Cooked to the perfect medium temperature and seasoned nicely. It came with a salsa verde on top which was a bit bland. The burger was just ok… actually it was really salty. I had to get up in the middle of the night to chug water. The service at Charcut has been really strong for all our meals there. Also, the room is nice, clean and trendy. I am not sure if we will go again. I think they need to re-visit some older menus and bring back some dishes. Also, the cookies on the way out… what happened to that? It was a great idea and totally unexpected.
I’m actually pretty disappointed to have to give these guys 3.5/5. I had really high hopes and my wife and mother in-law wouldn’t stop raving about it. That being said – I tried to devoid myself of having overly high expectations going into the restaurant. Anyway, I arrived with my wife and it was a beautiful restaurant. The hostess was well-dressed and the table we were seated at was perfect. Our waiter seemed a little peculiar given that he wasn’t quick to clean anything or ask us what we wanted – that’s okay though. He was overall helpful (thick French accent, but it wasn’t too hard to understand). First dish came out – duck fat poutine which was fantastic. Could have use slightly better presentation and maybe some seasoning but overall I loved it. Then the main courses – my wife had the albacore which was fantastic and I had the feature steak (it was a New York strip). It arrived and oh my god, it didn’t match anything else they served. I know what they were going for but it just felt so half-assed. I uploaded a picture so you can see what I’m talking about. I’d say the flavours made up for it but why was the steak soooooo salty. It was cooked to perfection but the salt content destroyed me.Then we had desserts and I’ll admit, those definitely worked in their favour. The cheesecake and salted caramel were fantastic. So, overall the experience wasn’t bad. I’m not unhappy (meal was about $160 for 2 after the tip) but I’m not overly impressed either. It was like a weird elevated Moxies or a slightly less impressive version of NoTabLE. I might not recommend it to a friend but I might return someday?
UPD: Went there for dinner last night, after they changed the menu, and left disappointed. The food wasn’t bad, although, the steak my husband got was way too salty. The presentation of that steak, though, was so bad, I felt like the person in the kitchen had zero respect for the food or the customer (see photo). All in all, not terrible, but for $160 for two people I expected a different experience. Considering that I really enjoyed lunch at Charcut a couple of months ago, this was especially upsetting. Also, in the photos you can see that they now serve dessert on pieces of their previous menu. Just bring that menu back, guys.==I’ve gone here for lunch a couple of months ago, and I’ve yet to come back for dinner. Absolutely loved my burrata arugula salad and cocktails! The cookies and piggie pins on to-go bags were a very nice touch ^^ Cocktails took forever to make (pretty sure we had old fashioned), so order two right away 🙂
I went here on a Wednesday evening for my wife’s birthday dinner. The place wasn’t very full for the time of evening but the place was very large and open and was able to keep a nice warm feel to it. The food was definitely very enjoyable, with good portions (if you order accordingly) and you definitely pay for it, which in my opinion is expected for quality. I don’t mind spending money for great quality food. Service wasn’t lacking drastically, though at a restaurant which obviously puts themselves on a certain level (reflected by price) the service could have been a bit more attentive and convenient. All in all, I will visit again in another year, dropping over $200 for a 2 person meal is only something you want to do so often, there are many places providing great food and amazing service at a much more reasonable price.
