The James Joyce is a well-oiled machine, full of ambience from the exterior, through the bar, down to the narrow passages that lead to the washrooms in the basement. The patio is refreshing in the summer, and the seats inside are cozy and familiar for when the temperature drops. Great food and drink specials, excellent menu (boxties and scotch eggs!) and an attentive fun staff. A great choice.
What’s to say about the Joyce that hasn’t been said? It’s been around as long as I’ve been in Calgary — 20 years — from an era when Irish pubs were trendy and people could actually afford to eat real authentic $20 Irish burgers. It’s a nice spot, but I think this city is ready for a Lithuanian pub, or a Polish pub with pyrogies.
Always a good meal here and glad they have an online reservation system. Our table was ready when I got here, server was great offered a bevage and told us what the soup was prior to us ordering. I got the turkey burger with no bun but with lettuce wrap instead. I wouldn’t mind it coming with more than one piece of lettuce but it was fine. The turkey patty was super moist and flavourful and topped with crispy onions which was nice. I opted for the potato, bacon & leek soup instead of the fries and it was seasoned great but could have been thicker. I wasn’t too hungry so it was the perfect size for me. My friend got the chicken curry Boxty. Smelled amazing and she said it was tasty but looked like there was a lot of peppers in it and I don’t like peppers. Great place to come grab a bit and catch up with friends at lunch.
Stopped in on a Saturday afternoon. The dcor was very authentic according to my friend who has been to Ireland. Started with a Guinness. My friend and I shared waffle fries nachos. Then ordered the bruschetta which was very unique and good. Had the Guinness float whichinclude Bailys and ice cream, a must try. Went to an eventthat night and stopped in again for a late night meal. Twofriends had Sheppard’s pie while I had the fish and chips.Absolutely loved everything about this place.
Food was quite good. Service was excellent. Place is great, but I’ve never seen such swarms of bar flies in a bar before. Not a few. LOTS. They need to clean up their act before they get too many bad ratings. I sure hope they do
The food at the this pub is better than most other pubs in Calgary. I’ve been here on two occasions: once for a weekday lunch and once later in the night for drinks and appetizers. Both times the food, drinks and service was wonderful. I love that their menu has such a wide variety of items – you’ll definitely find something for any palate! Their drink menu is equally varied. The pub has great ambience because of all the decorative wall hangings and items – it manages to convey an authentic sense of history. I would highly recommend the James Joyce Pub to anyone looking to have a great meal on Stephen Ave!
Excellent food and service. I had the grilled chicken skewers with kale salad, delicious and fresh. The famous Finnegans fish fry looked delicious as well
