Place seems clean and service is efficient…that’s about it. Went with a friend, ordered the shrimp salad roll to share, very blend and the hoisin sauce was the only rescue (and I am not a big fan of hoisin sauce). I had the wonton with egg noodles, it’s $1.75 extra if you want vegetables (I guess you pay for the downtown premium). The food is average but you pay the price for the location.
This place is close to my work so we go sometimes at lunch. The vermicelli meals are really good, the pho is decent. The problem with this place is the service. Today was the third time in a row that the food took over 30 mins. to arrive. This is unacceptable for a downtown establishment during lunch time. Today it took 45 mins for a couple bowls of pho! The server was nice enough and apologized, however never acknowledged how long we were waiting until I complained to her. She said she would bring the manager by but the manager never showed up. Then when we got the bill I suggested perhaps it should be discounted for the long wait. She went to the manager and the manager comped it (finally), which left us feeling better about wasting our entire lunchhour waiting for our meal. Several tables were complaining and many people had to leave or request their meal to go as many had to get back to work. I get it, it’s a busy place and who knows what the circumstances were – but at least warn or explain about any delays.
Solid choice for Vietnamese in Calgary. Generous portions of meat, overall the meal is smaller than most places. Seems to have some Indian influence with the spices, which I like, but others may not. Service was very quick for lunch. Little more expensive than other Vietnamese choices, but in a better location, cleaner and good service.
Great lunch spot. A bit cramped. Not very clean but the food is goodI had a chicken/pork soup and a iced coffee. Tasted great but could use a lot more spice Worth checking out
Small portions, a little pricy, but the saving grace is that the food itself is great! I do feel not full when I leave, but the indian flavours developed are really nice. Would recommend!
I love this place!!. Love the food here – it’s always fresh and well prepared. My favorite dish is #10 (spring rolls, BBQ pork on rice vermecelli). It is awesome. The staff have always accommodated requests for substitutions. I have never had an issue with service unless I show up right at the kitchen/lunch rush. Definitely make a reservation if you can and try to get there before noon to avoid the rush (all DT restaurants are slow at lunchtime). I bring coworkers, clients and friends here all the time. We always have great service and food. I have eaten at all of their locations and the only thing I found different was the cocktails – all the food is prepared the same. I really love the express location as it has all the favorites on the slimmed down menu and it’s close to my office. Going all the way to Gulf canada was a bit of a hike so this extra location is perfect! Some other favorites are: broiled lemongrass chicken, beef stir-fry on crispy noodles, salad rolls
Oriental Phoenix Express DT Calgary SUCKS. A co-worker and I just returned from the worst restaurant experience ever! We arrived at 11:43am, were served our drinks and appies immediately…even commented, wow…now this is express! Just wait…we then ordered our food around 11:55am …at 12:15pm we noticed a lot of food was being delivered to the tables so we asked our server about our food. She tried tell us our vermicelli noodles were taking longer to cook (please…these take 3 minutes in hot water) at 12:20pm we asked another server about our food and he said it was coming right out…at 12:30pm we asked to speak with the manager who admits our server forgot to enter our order into the system and claimed the veggie spring rolls were holding the order up…we advised we wanted the food to go…at 12:45pm she (the manager) brings our food out in a to go bag, does not apologize but asks us how we wanted to pay…we quickly tell her we are not paying as order delay and mix up is not our fault and that nearly an hour later is not acceptable. She tells us we don’t have to pay but that she is not giving us the food cause they don’t do that. They do not honor their mistakes. So our $10.00 dishes, that probably cost them 2.00 to make, that were an hour delayed are going to get thrown out rather than the manager doing the right thing, owning up to their error and giving us our food for free. Now, we are going to share this information everywhere where they stand the chance to lose future and/or repeat business….way to go Oriental Phoenix Express…way to go!
