Love the tepanyaki! My personal favourite is the sashimi salad – I can have 10 of those in one visit hahaha fun atmosphere. Friendly people. Servers are a bit slow sometimes. Ill go back again sometime.
Great Japanese restaurant inside the cowboys casino. We always dine here before concerts. Daily specials like $5 sushi rolls on Mondays are a hit! They also serve sashimi, teppanyaki cooked on the grill right in front of you, noodle dishes (chow mein & pad thai), soup dishes and several delicious appetizers. I really enjoy the Atlantic salmon sashimi, it just melts in your mouth! I would recommend the following sushi rolls: spicy salmon, rock n roll and angry California roll. The cowboys roll is something worth trying, I ordered it once and it was pretty good but i enjoy the other rolls more. Serve and ambiance are lovely and will definitely be back again and again.
Met a group of friends here for an unplanned bite one evening.Waitress was very friendly and personable, and was on point with affording the group time-enough to socialize and prepare an order.Hoping to provide the palate with an array of textures and flavours, we ordered a variety of different sushi/sashimi. Having been to enough sub-par sushi restaurants, I’ve learned that it’s always safest to order disproportionate amounts of smoked salmon. After all, you’d be hard pressed to have terrible salmon.I’m humble enough to admit when I’m mistaken. The waitresses care and attention went a long way, as each bite of sashimi required a large gulp of water to get it past the tongue – minimizing contact between taste bud and fish. The rolls were decent, but too few were ordered in proportion to the rest.Eventually it came time to throw in the towel. I feigned that I was full so as to not finish the last few pieces. It’s uncommon that I’m too full to finish other people’s plates, much less my own. Even more out of character is the wasting of food – especially from animals. This place did just that.I’m disappointed to say that based on this visit alone, that it ranks among some of the least satisfying sushi I’ve had.
It’s a bit of a pain to get to, and the food was pretty mediocre. I can say that the chicken was tender, but it needed more seasoning. It was as though they were on the right track with the flavour, but just didn’t add in enough kick. The sushi rolls were a good size, but are very soft, which makes them fall apart easily when you try to grip them with chopsticks. There are plenty of sushi places downtown that you can go to that are better, don’t really bother going unless you’re in the casino and just want a bite to eat.
I just happened to grab lunch while volunteering at the Casino. I’ve never had a high opinion of casino food but the chow mein was pretty good. It came with a side of quinoa salad which I thought was unusual. Portions were huge and I liked that I could have it at the bar, the volunteer room or the cash cage.
Japanese food for white people — the quality isn’t bad, not outstanding — but it’s hardly authentic and doesn’t really try to be.I liked it better when it was DT. The casino is a nicer setting but it’s out of the way and I just don’t like casinos generally. I went to UofA in Edmonton around the same time Vickers opened something called Club Malibu, a Miami Vice themed sh*t show before opening the original Cowboys which was definitely a sh*t show. People swear he’s mafioso, the casino definitely makes the case. He’s definitely moved up the value chain. But with so much good sushi in this city I’d be hard pressed to recommend Zen unless I was drunk and gambling, which isn’t going to happen. Even then, is go to Japanese Village or Kenjos if I want white bread.
Came here for an early dinner with a girlfriend after receiving rude service from the bar across the street, and boy we were glad that we did! The service was superb, from the hostess to the waitress! Our waitress was very nice, attentive, and knew the menu. The food was good, not the best, and it came out pretty quick, and in large portions. We underestimated the size of the portions. The restaurant was nice and clean, not as busy when we went, and I liked the ambiance, especially in the booth. Will have to return to this restaurant for their happy hour.
