Although I didn’t see the staff haranguing customers, I found this place way too expensive for what it was… 2 meatloaf specials (with three slices) and soda was $36?! While the food was ok, it wasn’t that spectacular. If you want an English pub, go to Celie’s or the Fox, both of which are close by.
Unfortunate Execution of Operating a Pub. Food is way over-priced and deeply disappointing. Location is good. Decor is good if you like the old-English-style(?) pub feeling. I was given a lot of resistance and accusations from one of the manager-types when I tried to send back a pint that had clearly gone bad. Reading the other reviews makes me wonder if that beer wasn’t collected from the dregs pitcher. Gross.
Just Okay…. I met a girlfriend downtown for lunch and kind of stumbled on this place.Although the service was fine I found the food wayyy overpriced for what we got. There also aren’t many healthy options on their menu…..i settled on a cajunk chicken sandwich because nothing really stood out on the menu. It was fine, but very bland…im not too sure what made it Cajun because all it had on it was iceberg lettuce, tomato and a chicken breast. I would suggest saving your money and heading almost anywhere else downtown.
Being on an instant first name basis was a nice touch. I liked the dark wood pub decor. For a pub the food was alright. They did try to mix things up with the usual pub ingredients and make a bbq chicken sausage pizza. Didn’t witness any swearing or micro managing during my visit.
Darlene and her daughter Karen may be the worst servers I have ever had. They swore and we’re yelling at each other like they were hillbillies and I’ve seen them take food off a plate and eat it on the way to the table. I’ve never felt more disgusted.Thank goodness for the other server,Dallas I think her name was. She made sure to fix everything those two old bats screwed up!! Wouldn’t recommend masters to anyone.
Be Master of your own destiny. I am a small businessman who develops & manages residential rental real estate. When work brings me to Calgary, I stay at the hotel around the corner. In the morning I’ll pop into Masters for a quiet breakfast. Then sometimes I’ll joined a group of colleages at Masters after work. It is a regular haunt for us. Tonight the table was approached by the proprietor Darlene who presented me with a tab from a previous visit. Purportedly I had left without paying for breakfast the last time I was in her establishment. One item wasn’t even something I’ve ever ordered but it would be embarassing to argue with her if front of colleagues so fine … I’ll pay the tab but it will be a cold day before I darken her doors again. She needs to learn a lesson on how to treat regular customers !!
Here again and just as good. I came here for breakfast and dinner today and the food is amongst the best that I have tasted in Calgary. The food is freshly cooked and the portions are generous. I now know who Darlene is and she is a dedicated person intent on making my visits a good experience. By the way, I am from the UK and have no ‘axe to grind’.I recommend this place for any time of day13 Mar, 2012Very welcoming a good breakfast. I have used this place for breakfast on at least ten different visits in the past year and always find the welcoming to be very friendly and the food good. Today I have eggs bendict on tomatoes and croissant and it was excellent. I don’t know who Darleen might be, but my experiences are quite the opposite of some of the other reviewers.
