Came here for big taste and was super stuffed!! I dont understand how people can eat five courses. Smoked beef tartare looked so impressive when it came out and the taste matched it! Other than that everything else was pretty mediocre. Salad was nothing special, truffle mushroom toast didnt taste like it had any truffle and I found the duck to be a bit dry. Dessert was meh, it tasted like a KitKat bar on top of a graham cracker. Service was amazing which is always welcomed!
I’m hoping it was an off day because the derrick gin mill has been on my radar for a while. I took my wife down for a quick bite and drinks yesterday before our evening plans. We stood at the entrance for a while because no one seated us. After about 5 mins I walked up to the bar and asked if we seat ourselves or if we needed to be seated. So someone grabbed us a table. Some one came by grabbed us or drink orders pretty quickly and the cocktail was fantastic! 9/10 And then we sat there for about 20 mins before I flagged down one of two the servers and asked if we could order our food. She said she would put it in and let our server know. We thanked her and continued to wait. I know they were short staffed and busy, I understand that. But in the hour we waited, no one asked if we needed anything, I wasn’t sure if our food was even coming. Eventually our food did come. The soup was cold, cooler than room temp but not straight out of the fridge cold 1/10. The gravy was congealed in two of our other dishes, the fried chicken had definitely been sitting around for a long time as the middle with the hot sauce was slimy and soggy. 2/10 Our server was sweet and did eventually ask how everything was, she apologized about being super busy and took the soup off the bill without me having to ask. I hope it was an off night because over heard nothing but good things about this place but unfortunately we did not share the same experience.
A+. Went here with my hubby and it was outstanding. The truffle dish was my FAVORITE. Good times. Meet Nathan the owner if possible. He’ll make sure you have a good time.
Went down for a weekend to Calgary and loved the Derrick. My fianc especially loved the food. Great atmosphere and fantastic service. A must go if you’re in town!
Came here for the first time for Valentine’s Day. Sat at the bar as we just stopped by for drinks. They had a Valentine’s Day his and hers drink feature. We ordered the men’s, which was amazing! The bartender said she had just made it up that day. The other cocktails we had ordered were amazing as well. Will definitely go back!
The drinks are amazing!! Even if you don’t like gin, but why would you go to a gin mill if you don’t like gin… Food was great too! I had the Brie and it was heavenly. I tried the fries which were good but the garlic aioli was interesting… It tasted like bacon fat and had the same consistency. I hated it but my husband loved it.
The drinks are amazingly varied, each with their own glassware and a focus on gin, although there are lots of other libation choices… This is a cool place to hang out on a Friday afternoon, have some appys and a few drinks. The food is surprisingly good, I’ve had the steak frites (house cut fries), steak was good but not spectacular… Montreal smoked meat sandwich, quite tasty, a little dry for those who like that, (although the waitress did ask if I wanted dry or juicy)… The smoked beef tartare is very tasty as well.Waitresses are attentive and keep the drinks flowing, overall a solid choice for lunch on Stephens ave.
