I went to S&M today looking so forward to ordering the tomato bacon bisque. Imagine my utter dismay finding out they have REMOVED it from their new menu. Omg! That was the absolute best ever!! I ended up with a chicken burger which was good, but not good enough to bring me back (like the bisque always did). Bad move State and Main.
If you’re at Southgate then State & Main is likely your only option if you’re not feeling the food court. The restaurant is located outside near Crate & Barrel. The place is super cozy and with a narrow dining room area and a bigger bar/lounge. Our server was here and there with lots of time waiting but she did have a lot of tables so it was fine. Their menu is pretty extensive with lots of choices from tacos, burgers, salads & some fusion items with heavy asian influence. We got their Tuna Tartare and their Brussel Sprouts to start. Their Tuna Tartare was okay, it sits on top of quickly deep fried rice pucks which aren’t that great. Too much rice and too little tuna. Their Brussel Sprouts though are pretty bomb. Nice and deep fried with bold bits from the bacon and lime. The buttermilk dressing they drizzle over is stellar. Great way to get your veggies in. My girlfriend got their Chicken Tenders w/ fries and the chicken was moist and tender. I got their Salmon burger w/ fries and Caesar salad. The Salmon was moist and not dry at all. Flavours though are pretty neutral as the red pepper aioli was pretty weak. So there wasn’t much to flavour my burger besides the salmon and bacon. Great burger bun, held up nicely throughout the eating process. Overall, State & Main is decent enough to get by if you’re not feeling the Southgate food court. It falls into the category of chain food with no real cultural identity. Don’t expect the menu/food items to excite, just enough to fill you up.
Was there today at lunch. Long wait to get in and hostess sat couple who obviously came in after we (two women) did. I asked if we had both just witnessed sexism at work since she had just seated the couple first because there was a man in the party. Of course not she replied as she had simply forgotten that we were open to being seated in the lounge.The Asian sub that I had did not taste Asian and the coleslaw with cilantro lacked cilantro and flavour.
Dinner and drinks tonight. 40 minute wait for a loud bar table that came with inattentive and rude service in what appears to be a not busy restaurant. Slow on taking orders, bringing drinks, napkins, food, and our bills. Even made mistakes on our bills. Food order is hummus, lettuce wraps, and cheese steak with coleslaw and fries. Hummus is a large potion but tastes of salt and not much else. However lettuce wraps are crunchy and full of flavor. Cheese steak sandwich is messy, served open face and not visually appealing served with limp fries and extremely disappointing coleslaw. Unpleasant evening. We will not be back to this chain establishment.
Great location conveniently access just off whitemud. Downside is that no reservation if you are planning to have a group of people there. Food was alright. Environment setup is comfy
Every time we give this location another chance, they blow it. The service really needs more attention. The food is good but if you aren’t ready to order when they come to the table, it might be a while. And not just once but the last three times we’ve been there.
Great atmosphere and staff. My husband and I always sit up at the bar during the casual Saturday lunch hours to order our drinks and food. We are always treated with such respect and every time we get served, the server or bartender go above and beyond to make sure we have a great experience.
