When I see a place who’s ratings run the gamut like this I am always really hesitant to place a rating. It shows that there’s just a really bad consistency issue with it and I have made the mistake of giving bad places a good rating because I caught them on a good day (cough, rocky mountian ice house, cough). All I can tell you is that my experience with malt and mortar was far better than expected. decor was cool (especially on the way to and in the washrooms) and the food was great for the price. I didn’t have a mixed drink, which given the name seems to be one of their self appointed specialties. service was nothing exceptional but nothing disappointing either.I’ll need to go back to try this place out again and if the experience is different I will revise my review. who’s to say if this is a good place with some bad days or a bad place with some good days but for my mileage I wasn’t dissatisfied with my experience.

On a whim I stopped in after a show this weekend and loved it! Since than I have taken my hubbie there and he was impressed as well! Cocktails were incredible and the food for price was exceptional. So far I’ve tried the grilled cheese and couscous salad, Peking duck and fries as well as the butchers block. The Peking duck was surprisingly loaded with meat, usually they skimp out with speciality meats like this, but not here! Super duper! The couscous salad is really relaxed and the butcher block is one of the best In YEG, fully loaded and great value. Can’t wait to go back hopefully they will have the gnocchi back in the menu, it’s the only thing holding you out for a higher rating!

If you want terrible service very mediocre food and a weird AF menu. Please go here. It appears the management is very inexperienced at running a bar or restaurant. Very unprofessional.

Decor is really trendy and nice, only reason for getting 1.5 higher Came here around 6ish on a Sunday. Stood at the front for about 5 mins even though it wasn’t busy. Hostess asked how many people .. and before I could answer she randomly went to a table to answer their question.. I told her FOUR people – she brought out 4 menus but only 3 plates and utensils. She was the hostess and waitress I guess.. she was super rude and got confused. She would ask a question but attend to a different table without waiting for any answers. She also asked how is everything when there was nothing on the table ?? The water and imaginary food was just fantastic. Ordered the fire Caesar ($12) which is Prairie Cucumber vodka, Clamato, sriracha and habanero. Spicy pepperoni. It sounded different so I wanted to try it. It tasted like straight Sriracha and vodka – a chunk of Sriracha sauce was just settled at the bottom of the cup. Also ordered the Jamaican jerk wrap with Caesar salad ($14). Salad was overly dressed and had too much lemon juice. Lettuce was becoming super soggy. Jamaican jerk wrap- it was okay.. but it just had chunks of onion rings. This is not a burger so why is there chunks of onion rings ? Also it had potatoes in it which had the same consistency of apples – so it was super hard and not cooked. Definitely would not recommend or go back

I have been here a few times now. Always great service and very friendly staff. The Duck Tatchos were fantastic, just the right amount of spice and flavour and the Faux Soup was a fantastic broth. My only disappointment was the Back Porch Tea, not that I don’t think is was executed properly, just too sweet for may palate. All and all, fantastic night out. Keep up the good work.

I enjoyed the ambiance and energy of this Whyte Ave gastro pub. The food was mediocre, not bad but not exciting. Would go back for drinks with friends, but not a meal.

I went on a Thursday evening with a friend. The atmosphere was very trendy and cool, I also loved the design on the inside. My friend got the Mac and Cheese and I got the Vietnamese sub. My friend’s Mac and cheese was delicious. One of the best I have ever had, possibly because of the type of noodles in the recipe. My Vietnamese sub was also decent. It was extremely saucy though, so it got messy really quick. Over all it was nice for a quick eat.
