Food was pretty good for modern Korean food 🙂 The server was very accommodating to our food sensitivities, and was more than helpful. The ambience was serene and the decorations were beautiful. I recommend eating here. Order the 3 mushroom japchae, the beef bulgogi lettuce wraps, and the Nongbu gimbap 😀
I’ve been here on multiple occasions and Nongbu has always been a favourite among my group of friends. After dining at multiple Korean restaurants around Edmonton, I think Nongbu is good but not amazing. I personally prefer classic Korean dishes over what Nongbu is trying to achieve- fusion cuisine. My favourite dish at this place is the deep fried rice cake. The rice cakes are plush like pillows, chewy and overall really tasty. It’s one of the must try appetizer at Nongbu. All main dishes come with an amazing selection of side dishes (5). All of them are pretty good and are refillable for free upon request! This time, I opted for the spicy pork bulgolgi ssam (lettuce wrap) which was $18 for an individual portion. I’m not sure how I feel about this.. While it’s cool that you can wrap your own meat with lettuce like how they do it at authentic Korean barbecues, at $18 it’s quite pricey. Overall, I feel Nongbu is quite pricey and some dishes are a hit or miss. If you prefer authentic Korean food, Nongbu is not the place for you. However, it is worth the visit and experience if you are new to Korean food and want a fusion take.
Nongbu took Korean cuisine to another level when they opened their doors 2 years ago. Since then, theyve been sought out to be one of the best Korean eateries in Edmonton; plenty of raves from food bloggers all around. So.. what sets Nongbu apart from the rest? Well, considering how Korean eats are a dime to none in Edmonton, the space alone brings you into the heart of culture. Simplistic design with enough rustic charm to transport you to the warmth of comfort food. Walking in, you immediately notice the rich wood beams mixed seamlessly with the grey wallpaper and black detailing. The projected black and white movie that was playing on the wall was a nice personal touch. My first visit was indeed overdue, but totally worth the wait. We arrived on a monday for lunch, getting there around 12pm with a party of two. No wait time necessary, but as we were halfway through our meal the restaurant started getting a rush. Service was quick and efficient, there was only the one server dealing with the lunch crowd but he did a great job- no complaints. We ordered and shared the DdukGalbi ($16) which was basically a big patty that you cut up and eat in a lettuce wrap. The patty itself I felt could have been saltier or at least more flavor all around, we relied heavily on the kimchi and the pepper paste it was served with.[]The star of the show, and what I was craving for the most was the GamJaTang ($18) The broth was so rich and the meat was to the point of falling off the bone- perfection. The dish had a really great balance with the ideal amount of ground pepper and heat. This and a bowl of rice was all I really needed. The portion was huge and can easily be shared with 2 people with maybe an appi. [5/5] My lunch meet up at Nongbu hit the spot. With a really relaxed atmosphere, I can see it as a perfect drinking spot for dinner or just a quick lunch getaway. I totally recommend, and will personally be back to have my favorite soup again and to try out the seafood pancake.
Nongbu just hits the spot for comfortable homestyle Korean food so it’s a shame I’ve only been here twice. I wish I could go more often. Their bulgogi kimbap is one of my favourites to order. Spicy dukbokki is a classic and also really good, but my bf says it’s not as flavourful as other Korean places we’ve tried. Kimchi bokumbap is really good, it’s kimchi fried rice with egg on top. Very filling – if it’s just me I would order that and I’d be full. The bulddak chicken (spicy chicken) is pretty spicy!! But tastes really good with rice. Too bad it seemed to have a lot more veggies than chicken though. Their ssam (lettuce wraps) would be their best thing on the menu (in my opinion). The individual portions are big enough to share for two people so ordering the full size is kinda too much. I tried their seafood pajeon in the past and it was just okay to me, nothing striking. I give them a 3.5/5 because of how comfortable I feel just sitting inside and it just feels like mother’s home cooked meals. Price is on the average side but the portions are pretty good so not much to complain about that. Service is decent. As someone has mentioned, their tables are small and the chairs are quite uncomfortable so I’m usually just in and out of there and don’t usually stay there to chat – there are lots of cafes in Whyte Ave for that 🙂
Ordering seemed unclear. I thought we had ordered a dish which apparently was not ordered. Servers should write down orders and confirm what was ordered
This is a very neat little Korean joint just off whyte, parking is a pain of course. It was a gloomy/snowy Friday evening at 5:30pm and I got a table instantly, even though it was moderately busy. My instant gripe was the tables are too damn small. And the wooden chairs they have aren’t exactly the most comfortable. But of course I came for the food so onto it. All the food came out in less then 15mins and sure enough our small table was quickly overwhelmed (bigger tables please). My girlfriend ordered the Ddeokbokki, they have 3 variations. Ours was deep fried quickly and smothered in a spicy sauce. Tastes like ketchup mixed with gochujang, but nonetheless it was delicious & chewy. Probably the best I’ve had, perfect amount of sauce to coat. My girlfriend got their Gamjatang; Spicy Pork Neck Potato Stew, served with a side of rice. It was very hearty and delicious, perfect for cold weather. The only problem, it wasn’t spicy at all. I got their Bulgolgi Kimbap, which really hit the spot. Rolled nicely, but I didn’t care for the sauce on the side. I much preferred some soy sauce instead. And lastly their 3 Mushroom Japchae. It wasn’t as tasty as other Japchae’s I’ve had, it was just all right. Needed more seasoning, but luckily it went well with all the side dishes (Banchan) that they give you when you order main dishes. Overall I really like this place, it had a cute vibe to it and everything is the subtle elevation of Korean cuisine. Jan 7 *Update*. Came back in a freezing -20 snowy day. I had their Budae Jigae (Military Base Stew) and with rice, it was so damn delicious. The broth was amazing with the spam and hot dog pieces. Spoon it over rice and you have one satisfying meal to warm you up!
