It was pretty dead when we came in the other night. I ordered the Nagasaki ramen (seafood) it was flavorful except the broth was only luke warm. My husband ordered the salmon like rice bowl and he really enjoyed it. We also got the squid tempura but they said they were having problems with their deep fryer so they gave us a couple is squid rings and a couple of croquettes. I thought although they were trying to make up for the mishap the portion was extremely small and still charged us full price. I think it’s kinda a ripoff. I would not recommend it at all.
Loved it! Three of us came to check out the ramen and are glad we did. Its a small room decorated in a clean spartan style. Service was perfect; friendly and efficient. I tried the Ookini ramen (tonkatsu). The broth, simmered for many hours, is luscious. The pork well seasoned and tender. The others both got the seafood ramen (Nagasaki). Excellent with very fresh sea food. We also had an appy – octopus fritters. Get these! They are great. Overall, this place is a winner. Thanks Ookini Ramen.
Best ramen in the city very surprised when I walked in and try it and honestly didn’t think I was going to like it that much. In fact I came in with a hate on for this place because I would always come when they were closed and was never happy about it.After months of waiting I’m glad I did because I will come back here often period also had the seaweed salad which was Top Notch and had zero fishy taste , or rather seaweed taste.
Went with family and it was an odd experience. There seems to be a very wide range of quality for the different ramen bowls, which strikes me as odd.Atmosphere wise, they have modern club music pumping in the background of a stripped down warehouse looking bar. It looks clean and modern.Service was decent. There was only one server when we came, but the restaurant was full of patrons. She took a while to get us water and about 15-20 minutes to come and take our orders. Food took about another 15 minutes to arrive.Taste for the ramen we ordered was … Confusing. The broth for the ramen that were pork based (ookini, tonkatsu, etc) was flavorful, salty and similar to the broth you’d find at other ramen houses. For some tastebuds, it might be a little too salty, though. The broth for any of the chicken based ramen (shio, chilli goma, etc.) was very underwhelming to say the least. With the shio ramen, you could just barely make out the chicken flavor, but it was still very unseasoned and a one note flavor that was lost easily. With the chili goma, you could barely taste the broth. It tasted very much like salted water with chili oil floating on top. I suspect the very very light chicken flavor is overwhelmed by the chili oil (which really only added heat, not flavor). Each bowl had one piece of cha siew that was very hearty, thick and flavorful. I can see this not being enough for some people, but it seemed to be the standard amount offered by most ramen restaurants. The cha siew may be the only source of flavor in the chicken based ramen bowls unfortunately, but it was very flavorful and juicy. Finally, the noodles (which are made in house), were thick, chewy and held the soup well. Unfortunately, they in themselves did not have any seasoning or flavor, but worked well in the one order of ookini that we had. Unfortunately, they fell flat in the chicken based broths.Overall, I do not think I would come back nor would I recommend this restaurant, unless we were in the vicinity and craving ramen. Even then, I may recommend going somewhere else. I couldn’t see myself going out of the way for this food, especially since there are better ramen places just 10 minutes away. In terms of price, I don’t think this is any different from any other ramen places, which again encourages me to go elsewhere for better flavor. Also, Calgary seems to be expanding in its ramen offerings, so there will likely be better options in the neighborhood popping up soon.
I’ve tried this place 3 times, trying to give it a chance over and over again. The first time, the broth was so bland, I actually counted that I added 3 tbsp of soysauce to make it taste about right. The second time, they stopped marinating the eggs which I thought they did a good job on the first visit so that was dissapointing, but their dipping noodles did taste good in comparison to the rest of their ramen. The third time I went, I only asked for the dipping ramen but I’m realizing the ramen is no longer as good even though the broth is. UGHHH it’s like a downward spiral. Plus I have been to japan and eat at a lot of ramen joints in town too so I know what is good ramen. This is…below average ramen. Good location though. I really wanted it to thrive.
Had the pork broth Ookini (tonkotsu). Broth was very nice and creamy. Noodles perfect. Only 1 tasty small piece of pork that was like butter to bite and 1 half soft egg. All was a bit too salty for me. But I’ll definitely come again. For us ramen newbies, I need more info on the menu. Had to google everything! Ambiance is great. Nicely designed.
So tasty!!! We spent some time in Japan last winter and this place brought us right back there. Genuinely delicious ramen! We have already returned a couple times and each time it’s as good as before 🙂
