Charged me double no receipt. I’m a delivery driver and got a call from a customer to pick up an order from Horn Of Africa. As I went in the cashier walked in the back and order was up by the till, took him 8 minutes to come back out and it was only after I went by the door there and hollered at him. Came out asked how much and he wasn’t sure ah first and was like ugh ugh 30$ for rice and beef. I paid it as I didn’t know what the price was gonna be and asked got a delivery ohh sorry till is not working properly. Delivered to customer and he was expecting to pay nearly half the price, as his order only cost $15. We tried calling phone is disconnected very dissapointed with the service and how they charged me double would not recommend them or will ever take an order from there again

Disappointing.. To be fair, this was my first forray in to African cuisine, so I did not know what to expect, but it was not a good first experience. Upon entering this establishment, my heart sunk. The small dining area was cramped and kind of dirty. The place was completely empty and it took several minutes before somebody came to seat us. The menu was very limited, less then a dozen items and there was no drink menu so I settled for water. I ordered some African beef stew with some sort of African flat bread. During the agonizing wait, what seemed like the family of the one staff member were sitting at a table talking loudly on their phones and occasionally popping their head in the kitchen to yell at the cook. This went on for some time. The food took about 45 minutes to reach our table. The meat was very tough and overspiced. The flat bread, much to my surprise, was actually quite delicious. I filled up on mostly just that, as the portion sizes were very generous. All throughout the meal, there was no sign of the server (as the server was also the cook and ran the register) so there was no refills on beverages. The entire time, no other customers came in. Altogether it costed about $50 for three. I do not recommend this place and with how things looked it will probably be closed in a year, if that. I am all for supporting the smaller establishments like this, but they really need to work on customer service and cleanliness of their front-end. That first step in to the building leaves a first and very lasting impression.

Nice Flavours. Not having a lot of knowledge of African cuisine, I can only say that the food had good flavour. I’d guess that being up in GP, some ingredients are hard to come by and the dishes can’t possibly be that authentic. As a case in point, part of the sauce in my goat dish wasn’t well-mixed, so I could taste plain old BBQ sauce. The meats were overdone for North American standards, but were nicely seasoned. The portions were generous.I was confused at the end of dinner as to how my bill came to be…no receipt to break it down…just a verbal confirmation of the final total. I don’t think the total was right. As for the service… horrendously slow. Maybe I’ll do takeout next time.

Good food, an amazing experience, and a place that deserves more patrons. I walked into this restaurant and immediately had second thoughts (specifically, that I should have played it safe and went to The Keg). It looked like an apartment living room…the staff were sitting at one of the few tables and that was it. Nobody was there, no visible activity in the kitchen…I could have sworn they were closed. The woman got up and said they were open, and shuffled over with a menu. I had second thoughts about staying, but I did. The ladies got up and left after I ordered (they went back to cook the food themselves) and I got huge plate with salad, a tasty/interesting beef+vegetable dish, plus a lot of this amazing bread that is kind of like naan…only waaay better. The portion size was huge.I noticed they had an african TV channel streaming via the internet. At the end of my meal, I noticed we were all enjoying a song on it (even though I obviously had no idea what the words meant). It was nice because it seemed to bridge a kind of divide. As I left I asked the woman what language it was. She said it was Somali, and that she was Somalian. I asked her if she still had family there, and she informed me that she had family members that were killed in the recent conflict. I left feeling happy that I had a good experience that was actually memorable (unlike the average chain restaurant experience…good but certainly not something you remember years later). Moreover, I got to use my money to support people like this….in this tiny little outfit, members of the community (as opposed to a franchise). Please do yourself a favor. Go check this place out, if only to have a different experience (which is good for all of us, I think). Nobody else walked in during the hour I was there (today – Friday – at 6:30). I’m already planning to return there next Friday. The Keg can wait. 🙂
