I ordered the Sate Vermicelli with chicken, prawns and pork as it was too hot out for soup. I found it to be quite salty and. It spicy at all. I quickly wished I had tried the soup instead This is one of the nicest Vietnamese restaurants that I have been in though. Very very clean, classy decor and they have a little patio! The staff was wonderful as well. I think I’ll give it a second try so I can see what the pho is like…stay tuned.
I first ate at Basil probably around 2010 and I was in love. The beef sate soup was spicy and rich and I always named Basil as my favorite Vietnamese in the city. I didn’t get to go very often for quite a few years as I had moved away, but recently have made several trips there as I’m in the NE more often. It’s definitely not the same, not even close. It’s like any mediocre place you can find anywhere in Calgary. If your pho broth isn’t good, nothing else can be good either. The food isn’t bad, it’s just average now. I don’t know what’s happened between the first times I ate there and now, but it’s not a must go destination like I used to think of it.
