Bootleggers is a CSSC recommended partnership pub so headed there with the team after a game. It was all you can eat wing night for $12.99 and pitchers of Velvet Fog were on special so that was our go to. Some of the best salt and vinegar wings I’ve had in the city as they actually manage to get the flavour to stick instead of finding its way to the bottom of the bowl. Buckets are provided for the bones which is nice for clean-up. They charge 10 cents per wing that isn’t eaten after three wings with the proceeds going to the Calgary Food Bank. A great initiative actually, as it cuts back on food waste and sees money going to a good cause. hipkineatsthings.com
Unfriendly staff, unable to make a decent Caesar and was upcharged to a special Caesar (the works) when I asked for a regular one, wings were undercooked. Not highly recommended, will not go back.
I work nearby and visit bootleggers often for a quick bite. I’ve tried most items on the menu. Strangely enough for a pub their Pub food is just adequate (wings, nachos etc) but their entrees are excellent. Steaks and burgers are really good so I often have o a steak Only ever had to return one once (over done). The salmon is probably the best dish on the menu (must have). Staff is better than average for a pub and ambience is what you’d expect for pub. The food on the other hand far exceeds pub expectations.
Staff (and most management) don’t have a clue!. I live close to Bootleggers, and I’m constantly trying to give it ‘one last shot’. This place goes through staff like crazy, and while in this industry that is common, Bootleggers seems to take it to a whole new level. The staff are constantly standing around gossiping, or literally not working. I watched a couple sit down in a quiet area, saw one server approach another sitting at the bar saying she had a table and the server flat out said ‘I don’t want to start yet.’ Do restaurants give their employees this option? We watched the couple sit for nearly 20 minutes before being asked to move tables (it wasn’t very busy for the 3 servers on, they could have accommodated them). There did not appear to be any management present at this time, but when who I assume was the manager DID appear, she looked like she couldn’t be bothered doing her job. It got busy for UFC and some staff were asking her for assistance and she would just brush them off and continue her conversations with the doormen or bartenders, or disappear into the back all the time. Funny how when she appeared, the ‘I don’t want to work’ server was suddenly ‘working’-if you could call it that. She basically stood around complaining about not wanting to be there, or would lazily sit down uninvited at other people’s tables and chat with them. A few young men behind us were graced with her presence and they laughed with us after she left about how odd it was. They quickly asked for their bill after the skinny, scraggly haired waitress told them she’d be off soon and attempted to make plans with them (maybe this will be good for business in some way?!). Just an odd atmosphere…The positives-the food was actually really good. We had the steak specials and ordered at a great time (before UFC started), they came out quickly and tasted great. Our server (blonde girl) was friendly, accommodating and informative-although she seemed a little more mature and didn’t seem bothered by the other staff. We also had a second manager come by, a younger blonde girl and she was FANTASTIC. She was running around helping staff, cleaning and clearing tables, dropping off drinks and food, it was refreshing to see management going above and beyond when these days it’s rare to find. We learned from our server her name was Nicki and that she’s a supervisor. If anyone around there cares, get rid of the older female manager that doesn’t care and get Nicki there all the time! This visit had been a better than the last, but Bootleggers still needs some major tweaking. I hope they can find some decent staff worth keeping (maybe avoid the 18-20 year olds for awhile), because I’d love to be able to frequent this place more often. But as it stands, this place is kind of a joke in the area.
Waited 30 minutes till a server came by. Came in on a Sunday for lunch with my girlfriend. I waited 30 minutes till a server came by. I would have left earlier but I had money left in the buck hunter game and was waiting for my girlfriend to show up. So, I continued to play. Finally a server came by and dropped off two menus. About 20 minutes later she came back. By then I was more than fed up so I paid for the two pops me and my girlfriend had and we left. It was not busy at all and there were three servers there. I wonder why this place is not busy anymore and why my friends don’t like coming here anymore and now I know why.
Terrible food even worse service. Went here for wings night with some friends, wasn’t that busy but the service couldn’t be worse.. after 10 mins waitress took our orders but nowhere to be seen otherwise. Wings were underwhelming in size so we ordered more.. when she came back 40 minutes later (my drink had been empty for 30 of those minutes) to ask if we needed more drinks she seemed to have no recollection of our 2nd wings order. We decided not to bother and left, never to return.
