5+ as this is one of Calgarys best dining experiences! Everything always goes above and beyond my expectations. Divine!! Ive got to come here this summer so that I may experience lunch outside of the historic house on their patio!!
Four of us met for lunch here and had a great time. Its a fun venue, being the former home of A.E. Cross in Inglewood. Its got a huge backyard from which much of the salad ingredients come. A large tent is set up there, allowing us to eat and chat in a garden setting. Fantastic. Three of us enjoyed the Summer Feast set menu that included a delightful salad with edible flowers, a very tasty bison ragu on home made noodles and a panna cotta with fruit preserve. Yummy. Our fourth had an eggs benny dish that was perfectly prepared. Service was leisurely and professional. Many thanks to team Rouge for a lovely summer lunch.
Considered by many to be Albertas best fine-dining restaurant since opening in 2003, the 19th Century Cross House reimagined as Rouge by Chef Paul Rogalski and Olivier Reynaud, it was less than thirty minutes after exiting their sister-Bistro that I was seated in a sizable corner two-top, the server not even walking my way until nearly fifteen minutes later.Suggesting a strong focus on Alberta in their online description, the words regional and local liberally sprinkled with adjectives of self-praise to define their Philosophy of Fine Dining, Rouge is located in a residential neighborhood with ample parking along the streets, the building itself appropriately painted a deep shade of red with the interior pleasant, if not a bit stuffy, as heavy curtains and linens are flanked by vivid oil paintings.Apologizing profusely for ignoring me, a large table in the adjoining room commanding a lot of attention combined with my location and the Hostess not alerting him to my presence offered as an excuse, it was with Water and Menu in hand that choices were made, the tasting menu passed due to an odd Asian theme in a place whose style very clearly references France.Offered two Amuses to begin the night, the second plus a later Salad presented gratis as further apology, both the Beet and Duck Liver as well as the cured Trout proved tasty and complex while a half-slice of Red Fife Sourdough was served as though it was some sort of luxury ingredient alongside grassy House-churned Butter that instead stole the spotlight.Disappointed by Bistro Rouges outsourced cured Meats, and again here where Elk Sausage and Bresaola are brought in with Canadian Cheeses to pair with housemade Lonza and a compact Foie Gras Torchon that proved impossible to spread on razor-thin Crostini, accoutrements including Pickled Blood Orange and Yellowfoot Mushrooms thankfully propped up the $36CAD Board, the aforementioned Salad a far better value with featuring the complex interplay of seared Sweetbreads, bright acid, tangy Yogurt and toasted Pumpkin Seeds.Featuring the same exquisite Rougie Duck as Model Milk, but eschewing aging in favor of a plump Breast pan-Seared over ground Sunflower Seeds, Bok Choy and charred Eggplant under a tangle of Sunflower Shoots, dessert at Rouge showed similar to that at the Bistro by way of two choices, the Roasted Apple Mille-Feuille texturally compromised by leather akin to a Fruit Roll-Up while the Sticky Toffee Pudding tasted like moist Spice Cake next to crumbles of Walnut and lightly-sweetened Garden Squash Ice Cream. endoedibles.com
We finally got to eat here. The server we had was excellent at explaining the menu, drinks and even the history of the Resto and house. Love the fact that they grow a lot of what they cook in their garden. We had the seafood chowder which was excellent. The char was nicely done as well. Duck was cooked very well – moist and tender. Lamb was alright a bit overcooked. The pork belly appetizer wasn’t good – the pork was dry and overcooked. The dessert came out and on the house for my bday which was very appreciated but – it had tree nuts and we had told the server I was allergic to them when sitting down. Overall a great experience but a couple of somewhat major hick ups with the food which is disappointing considering they are one of the top restos in Alberta.
This is probably one of the best restaurants in Calgary. The ambiance, the location, the service, and the food are all top of the line. We had the elk tartar, the lamb, and the rockfish. Absolutely amazing, perfectly seasoned, perfect temperature, and just great ingredients. For dessert we ended with the macarons and the cheesecake. The macarons were so good and delicate I crushed them with my barbarian hands before I could even get them in my mouth. I must try in Calgary.
Hands down the best restaurant in Calgary! If you’re a ‘texture’ person, this is the place to go. It is pricey but it is totally worth it. We regretted not ordering the chef’s tasting menu ($115 pp). However, the individual dishes were equally good. We had the marinated smoked mackerel as starter, grilled iron steak & seared duck breast as our main courses. They were all fantastic! Their pumpkin cheesecake brought cheesecake to the whole new level. You can skip any other restaurant in Calgary, but not Rouge. Reservation is highly recommended. My advice – allow more time than you need, it’s typical French slow service fortwoplz.com
Two weeks ago my family of 4 went to Rouge to celebrate 2 birthdays. We left the restaurant rather shocked and disappointed with the sub-par food (Chef’s Tasting Menu) and service we experienced. Given the great reviews on Rouge, as well as, many recommendations from friends, I contacted the management to express our disappointment with the evening. My husband and I were invited to back to Rouge for the Chef’s Tasting Menu and Wine Pairing. I would like to thank the management, the chef and our server for showing us that Rouge does offer exceptional and innovative food and that the service is friendly and professional.
