The service was excellent, the server would always welcome you with a big smile. Food was delicious, especially the laksa and the roti. They even have a lot of options for vegetarians, which is great. Overall, everything was 10/10.
My favorite things to order there are the Laksa and the Roti. Nice and cozy small family business. Owners are very friendly, they seem very passionate about the food. They are also very enthusiastic if you have any questions about what to eat. Have been there several times and would go back again!
Authentic Malaysian food, proprietary family recipes for sauces and broth, not shy with the spices Friendly service, local family owned and operated, passionate about the food Great for a meal or a sweet top-off Highlights: roti canai, chile sauce(s), white coffeeWe’re so glad to have found this spot! Overall we enjoyed the food and service we tried the following:- Appetizers: Roti combo (roti canai, veggie curry sauce, deep fried meat dumplings, veggie spring rolls), veggie drumsticks* the roti canai was great: flaky, chewy and warm the curry that it came with had a nice amount of heat and was loaded with tofu and cabbage (it was the veggie variety). Salted right, was just a tad viscous (wish it were a bit thicker)- Main: Laksa Curry Noodles* first sip of the broth I tasted coconut and immediately could detect the toasted aromatics; nuanced and delicious. Only complaints are, again, I wish it was a little thicker, and a bit saltier. The prawns were not overcooked (Hallellujah) and retained their flavors, the fish balls and fish cakes were springy and fresh-tasting, and the crispy tofu added a great mouthfeel element. – Dessert: Kaya Mille Crepe Cake* a family-developed layer cake recipe incorporating housemade coconut jam. This was light and sweet, and the icing was surprisingly tasty and smooth. The crepe portion was dense and springy, great to have with coffee.- Drink: White Coffee* an exclusively imported blend from Malaysia, super smooth and reminscent of mocha. A stand out. Thanks Vivian and Rodney for your hospitality and we’ll be seeing you again!
Went for lunch. Looks to be Owned and run by an older Malay couple. Food was excellent. I had Sambal prawns and the flavor was very good. Service was a bit spotty. Kind of like getting served by your friends mom. She was really nice tho. Overall I’ll be coming back for sure. Food was authentic and legit
Nice little shop serving Malaysian street style food. Seems pretty authentic, i had the ba ku teh and noodles, i been to malaysia and singapore and its pretty authentic, of course not as good as original country, but its worth a try.
Being from Southeast Asia, I think I have a higher expectation for Malaysian food than most, especially with the lack of premium Edmonton restaurants that serve Malaysian food. My friends and I stopped by Island on a Saturday night after a nearby restaurant was full. The restaurant was fairly empty and there was tons of parking. The restaurant tries to mimic many aspects of Southeast Asia’s culture, and had several Malaysian flags in the restaurant. Also nice to note while talking to the (owner?) that he was from southern Malaysia, meaning that he’s aware of how genuine Malaysian food tastes. My friends and I split their Roti with curry sauce. It was really good, the sauce was almost too diluted, but was still flavourful. The roti was crispy and soft at the same time, and while one of my friends compared it to the frozen ones you could get from T&T, I disagreed and said that this was much better than the T&T ones. I had their Laksa (one of my favourite foods that I try at every restaurant that has it). The laksa was a bit above average. Compared to most restaurants in Edmonton that serve it, I found it to be less spicy but slightly more genuine. It was nice having a variety of ingredients in it too. However as usual, it wasn’t close to the same levels as what you could get in Asia. And it wasn’t very spicy (though you can ask for more chili sauce if needed).Service was slow, but chatty and personable. All in all, for Edmonton standards it’s seems like a genuine attempt by a small family business for good Southeast Asian food. I’d love to come back and try some of their other food (curry!). Don’t expect the world from it, but for Edmonton’s standards it’s definitely one of the best restaurants for Southeast Asian food. Recommended.
