The last time we went to Ginger Beef was when they were still situated at Willow Park. So we went to try their lunch buffet. Its smaller than it used to be. But out favourites were still there. Their ginger beef was tasty and not too spicy. The two soups were both tasty and hot. Most buffets only have lukewarm soup. The cost was reasonable but it would have been nice to have a small dessert to end the meal.
Pretty mediocre Chinese. Though I heard they have a lunch buffet again so I may check that out. Wonton soup is good, but Id skip the chow mein, that is not good, go with the fried rice instead.
Honestly I think I am addicted to their ginger beef with their special hot sauce. They even sell the hot sauce in jars if you want to take it home!
Went for the lunch buffet this afternoon. It’s quite small but the price was a reasonable $11.95 however, all the food was cold. The won ton soup at first was just broth. The won tons were added later but the temperature was just above lukewarm. Will not return any time soon
We ordered take out as we had a mail brochure with coupons for $0.99 dumplings with minimum purchase. The food came sooner than we were told, about 45 minutes from ordering, and everything was hot and fresh, but every dish was lacklustre. The palace style chicken was cooked perfectly, but the sauce had minimal flavor. The mo-she pork in the pancakes barely had any flavor besides the hoisin sauce it comes with, and the pancakes were so brittle they would break when folding it together. The dumplings were small and not flavorful, and the ginger and green onion beef was just blech. The shanghai noodles barely tasted like anything, and the veggies were the only things in dishes that tasted as they ought to. The only thing with a decent amount of flavor in the sauce was the shrimp, which came with the sauce separate and the shrimp deep fried. Nothing tasted bad, and it was all definitely edible, but for $80 (6 dishes) I think we’ll go elsewhere next time.
We had the peking duck and it was amazing! The skin was crispy and the crepes were nice an hot! We love dining here or ordering take out on the weekends. The salt and pepper squid is tasty and has the perfect amount of heat. I would recommend having this at the restaurant as it can begin to get soggy during take out. Most of the time the food is amazing but they do have their off days. Regardless this place is definitely worth a try if you haven’t been here.
There are 10 items on Ginger Beef Express’ dim sum menu. I don’t think that really matters when soup dumplings are on the menu. Not an easy item to make, nor find in Calgary in my opinion, but they have them here at Ginger Beef Express of all places. The other items on the dim sum menu are basic dim sum items like shrimp dumplings and shui mai, and they’re decent. Fresh and made to order, they’ll do in a pinch. However, the price for items is around $5 to $6, which can be on the higher end for dim sum.Considering the lack of dim sum spots in the south, this place can satisfy a much-needed gap. And yes, I know it’s a chain restaurant you wouldn’t think twice about skipping, but if you know what to order, it might be worth a stop by for a quick lunch.
