First of all, as a born and raised Calgarian, I have a soft spot for Phil’s and know exactly what to expect from this classic diner…..I’m not expecting 5 star food. Upon walking in, I was immediately struck by the sterile feel, distinct lack of cozy booths and the unbelievably tacky bright orange mosaic of bizarre chair and banquet coverings. This does not feel like a warm friendly diner in any way. I ordered a ham/cheese/mushroom omelette with shredded hash browns and my buddy ordered a clubhouse with fries and gravy. Even though there were only 5 people in the restaurant our orders took about 25-30 mins. First to arrive was my buddy’s clubhouse. Instead of a side bowl (like they do at the other Phils), the gravy was just lazily dumped all over the fries creating a big soggy mess. If he wanted a plate of slop he would have ordered a poutine. Then my ham and cheese omelette arrives…..sorry the chef forgot the ham. Would you like a bowl of it on the side sir? No, thank you, I don’t. There was literally more cheese than there were eggs on the plate. It was gross. The hash browns were so greasy They left a slick of oil on the plate. One big pile of greasy slop. I ate maybe 1/3 of my breakfast and simply gave up so as not to make myself sick. The waitress was nice and none of the above was her fault, however, she neglected to take anything off the bill to compensate for what was the worst breakfast I’ve ordered in Calgary in years. I’d like to think it was just a case of growing pains but regardless, I WILL NOT be returning. Bad atmosphere, terrible food. Please pick up your act, New Phil’s. In the very least, please hire a short order cook that has some clue what they’re doing.
