I’m not sold on this place. The Vietnamese sub was very odd with no spice whatsoever (no jalapeo, no chile, no paste). It did however have bruschetta (tomatoe and onion that made the bun very soggy). The meat and shrimp were all bright colors pink / red but I have no idea how that happens. The sate beef salad rolls had no spice or peanut so I don’t know how it is sate. I guess overall it was a confusing meal. The vermicelli dish was delicious though !
Vietnam pho has no brisket choice, its disappointing. The broth was so so. And without I was asking, the waitress didn’t bring me bean sprouts, lemon and basil. That’s the basic side dish or seasoning for a pho. I won’t come back here again.
Being a pho enthusiast I tried a lot of the places around Calgary. This one I would not recommend for pho! It is too salty as if it came from a box! Not to be cliche but this place is a westernized vietnamese place…
Surprised at any of the good ratings…..went last night. Tried to order a glass of red wine…out of the 7 options, they had none….not a one. Then husband tried to order a beer and same thing all out….just ridiculous. Food was drenched in so much sauce you could not even tell rice and rice vermicelli were even on the plate. The most disgusting part was the beef…over tenderized very poor cuts were like bubble gum to eat…putrid. Took all of it out of my dish and the waitress asked about and then said nothing. Had to listen to the owner chat with his friends in the lounge instead of paying attention to clients the entire evening….not even a goodbye as we left. This place had a good reputation but now I think people come here for a fast lunch. Dirty tables, seats and bathrooms. Will not be back. Very unprofessional management….this is not your living room…this is your business. Complacency is very common when your family owns the business…
Terrible. Went for Pho here and was very unsatisfied with the soup I got. Overpriced, small, too salty and the beef was sliced too thick making it chewy. It took me longer to get my bill then it took me too finish the soup. This wasn’t because of the service, they were somewhat busy, it was just over that quick. Won’t be back.
I ordered the sate beef noodle soup, the portion was half the size of other restaurants, the noodles were mushy, and the broth tasted like that of instant noodles.
Once upon a time, I worked close to Oriental Phoenix on 58 Avenue, and it was always so busy at lunch that I drifted away from eating here and then I wasn’t working nearby and lunch visits weren’t on my mind. I’ve been back three times in the last six months for dinner, though, and I’ve enjoyed it each time. The menu isn’t confusingly extensive, the spring rolls are always good, and I’ve tried more than just the usual soup or vermicelli noodles with great enjoyment. When it’s swamped with people at lunch, I can see where someone might say the service is an issue. Yet at 5pm on a Friday, the service was great as people slowly filled the restaurant, and the food quality remained deliciously enjoyable from visit to visit.I like a number of Vietnamese restaurants and like to cycle through them, but Oriental Phoenix is a constant on that list and always an easy choice when looking for a good meal that will satisfy my cravings.
