I think Dessert Island is probably the only HK dessert place in Edmonton. It’s on 97st and 107ave on the corner. It’s hard to find if you’re not looking for it but it’s truly a hidden gem.I love ordering black sticky rice & mango with coconut milk. Other faves are Cha-cha and eggettes. They sell candies and instant drinks & desserts by bulk if that interests you, but I haven’t bought them. My bf bought their dried squid and other dried food there before and he likes them. They are a bit pricey, from what I know they range from $8+. I love going here because it’s so quiet and feels very homey. The ladies who run the place are so sweet and so friendly as well. The thing I don’t like is the price… the desserts that we get are usually expensive.. if we get 3 things, our total would be about $20. Also, they open late, from the afternoon till late evening I believe. I wish they opened a little earlier like around 12pm. I keep going back because there’s a lot on the menu that I want to try! Only when I want to splurge on desserts though..

Shaved Ice – Mango. Very finely shaved ice that just melts in mouth. Lots of mango chunks that we saw her cut. Apparently she forgot the ice cream but it was still really good. Will be going back again so I’ll be sure to get it with the ice cream!22 Jul, 2014Mango Supreme. Mango chunks and tapioca hiding underneath. Not too sweet.

New Hidden Gem!. Just before the arch of Chinatown lies a cute little Hong Kong styled dessert house, a bit sketchy outside (and area) but very quaint inside! We were greeted by very lovely ladies (perhaps mother and daughter?), sat down at the table and was served water immediately. It is a small cafe but very nicely decorated inside with small tables and chairs with a couch/tv area in the corner. Not only do they serve shaved ice and puddings, but also salads and noodle dishes. Further more they also have a bookcase consisting of drawers full of bulk candy for you to purchase as well!We tried the mango pudding and deep fried mango fruit roll, and both were made to order which was nice as we were expecting a quick order eat and go type meal. The cafe had a very open concept so we were able to see the kitchen in the back and watch them make the desserts. They were very careful and put a lot of effort into it (made with love!). Both desserts were delicious, love that it was all hand made and had nice presentation. Great priced, lots of variety on the menu, will definitely be back to try more!
