I don’t go to a Humpty’s expecting a lot. Usually the breakfasts are reasonable, but on this day we decided to try it for lunch. The burger was par but the open face turkey sandwich was pretty pathetic – two pieces of Wonderbread with a few pieces of turkey on the top, not even between the two pieces of bread. Of course it comes slathered in gravy which is expected and welcome. The kernel corn was straight out of the can. Down-home cooking it was not. While the prices weren’t too extreme, there are too many choices to waste time here for lunch (and I have topresume dinner). Stick to breakfast and at least you might have a 50/50 chance.
As with most franchises, this place is cookie cutter, the question becomes, does it hold up to it’s expected namesake like any other location. I can say the eggs bennie was surprisingly good. While I read Jackie’s review just now about the Hollandaise sauce, I had an opposing view. It was pretty good. The problem with Hollandaise sauce is that it is usually super creamy and you feel the coma coming on after your first egg. In this case, I was able to eat both easily as the sauce was well balanced. The pirogies however were very boxed, and weren’t the right choice for me today. We also ordered the chicken fingers and fries with gravy. The fries were also boxed and didn’t last special at all despite the attempt to dress them up with some cheese. Our server was quite elderly, but super sweet. Don’t know if I’d be back, but not the worse place I’ve ever been to.
Quite possibly the grossest breakfast I’ve ever had! Ordered eggs Benny. The ham tasted more like spam, the hollandaise was closer to white in color than yellow and was flavourless. Hash browns tasted freezer burnt. I’m not one to complain, but nothing on the plate tasted good.
