We have been driving between Calgary and Saskatchewan since 1988, and our meal stops in Medicine Hat have always been McDonalds or pizza places. This trip we discovered the Rustic Kitchen online, and stopped in to try it out.The food was excellent. I had salmon, and my wife had the fried chicken. The menu was ambitious, and lived up to the ambition. They are aiming high and reaching what they aim for. This will be our new dining venue at the Hat.Recommended.
I’m tempted to give this place a 4.0 in light of the ‘competition’ in Medicine Hat but I’ll remain objective and give it a solid B. I’ve been a few times now, mainly because of it’s proximity to my hotel, and I think that this restaurant is a few tweaks away from a much higher score. The locally sourced ingredients are of high quality (good beef, nice cheese, fresh vegetables) and suffer only from unskilled execution – uninspired plating, lack of control between rare-medium rare-medium etc… easily rectified problems. The concept is unique (in this town), the short-ribs are a stand-out and the space itself has been nicely renovated, give it a shot.
