My dinner club went here a few weeks ago for our Oktoberfest themed dinner and it did not disappoint. If you are looking for authentic German fare, food that tastes just like the dishes I have eaten in Germany and Austria, then this is the place for you. It is an old building, formerly Barb & Ernies, and still has he signs up for it. You don’t go here for a flashy modern dinner, you go here for authentic food and the charming homey atmosphere. To get the Friday buffet you need to arrive before 7 and we did so, even earlier than that. What a deal for $22.95 per person. The meal starts with the soup of the day, which for us was Tomato Zucchini. It was ok, a little too peppery for my taste. Then the salad bar with many choices (not particularly German). But then came the best bit…the German buffet! I should have taken notes as to what we sampled but I was too busy enjoying it. There was Wiener schnitzel, bratwurst and weisswurst (sausages), red cabbage, rouladen, amongst others including delicious gravies and mustards. One highlight for me was the sptzle (looks like scrambled egg but is really more like a pasta); it was fantastic. There was plenty of German beer and even a peach sangria on the menu that evening. The dessert bar was plentiful too, while maybe not hugely authentically German (no apple strudel on offer that night) but the pumpkin cake with salted caramel was delicious. The service was wonderful. They were super kind and friendly, and put up with our talkative lot with a smile, even though we were the last ones to leave. I’d highly recommend this place for those looking to try something different in Edmonton.
Love Barb and Ernies! The portions are huge and the prices are low! We always get mimosas which come in big beer mugs, eggs Bennie and a peach crepe to share. Never disappoints!
