I decided to try this place after a friend mentioned a new lunch spot had opened in the neighbourhood and claimed to be a smokehouse. As a transplanted Vancouverite I’m always on the lookout for new spots around my new found city and this one was close to the office. Overall YEG, you impress. However the Karlen Smokehouse and Cafe gets a HUGE PASS from this food lover. The ambiance is so strange. It feels like you’ve walked into the company’s staff room. The staff was curt and demeaning. I ordered the pulled pork, beans, coleslaw and mac and cheese. The pulled pork was embarrassing, flavourless and dry. The beans were subpar, having me wonder if they just jazzed up a can of some grocery store brand and the macaroni and cheese was cold, soggy and tasteless. I asked for my mac and cheese to be warmed up. Someone named Robert, claiming to be the owner muttered under his breath as he rudely snatched the dish from my hand. If I could rate this place lower than one star I would. Save your money, this place is not worth what they charge for such poor quality cafeteria style fare served by the equivalent to a cranky lunch lady. Stick to the construction business Karlen!
