I think the thing I like most about Mary Brown’s Chicken is that at peak traffic times you can pick up a family feast or whatever In minutes. Service has always been really good. Gravy is a billion times better than KFC.
My first time experiencing Mary Brown’s was positively satisfying, but not exceptional. I ordered the 3 Piece Dinner with taters, a small Macaroni Salad, and a Mug Root Beer. I chose to taste the macaroni salad first. This was a small salad that came free with the dinner, but was VERY small indeed, about cup. While the salad itself was good (I haven’t been a macaroni salad person myself), it tasted very close to a cold acidic macaroni and cheese with two red pepper pieces mixed in. Not a fantastic first impression of Mary Brown’s, but hey, that’s not why I came. The chicken was very nicely seasoned, but the meat itself was relatively flavourless since it was not marinated or seasoned on its own. And while I know it’s supposed to be comfort food, having to consciously be aware of where the excess grease lands when I bite into it is slightly less than comforting. I opted in for taters today. The taters themselves were nothing special, but they were very unevenly seasoned (as if that were possible), in that the taters on top had little to no salt, and the ones on top of the chicken (yes, the chicken was BELOW the fries, likely to compensate for the grease left in the chicken) were coated thoroughly with salt, making them difficult to eat near the end. In terms of service, the lady who took my order was very friendly and personable, though there was some confusion, perhaps on my part, since there were no utensils or napkins in the bag for the salad and for the mess. Overall, I give this experience at Mary Brown’s Red Deer a rating of 3.5 out of 5.0.
