wait for 40 minutes, still no food on the table yet! However, a table that came much later than us are eating already! it looks like they know they are friends!!!!
We stopped by for a Sunday lunch during errands and had a couple delicious bowls of soup. Tucked away in a cosy corner, we had an excellent bowl of Yukaejang. Savory and spicy on a chilly October day.
There are so many Korean restaurants in Edmonton… it’s like becoming the next BBT or Fried Chicken phenomenon lol. I’m going to start off by saying that I’ll never venture into a Korean restaurant if I were to choose to dine out, but if my friends called me up and made me go, I’d love to go, and then I’ll realize how much I do like Korean food. OK… Now that’s out of the way, let’s get to this newly opened Korean restaurant in Little Korea / Little India neighborhood of 34 ave :)I spent $30 to order this chicken dish where they serve on a big hot plate that is enough to serve 2. It was surprisingly not salty or full of MSG. I haven’t tasted Korean food this natural for a long time. It was still spicy though, no doubt, but not enough to make you cry like those hot Korean noodles challenge on YouTube. I like how when you are done with this dish and you’ve eaten up all the chicken and stuff and the scraps and sauces are left, the server offered to add white rice and seaweed oil on the hot plate for free and allowed all the rice to soak up the leftovers and turn the dish it something new again. That was cool. Very innovative. I liked the cold dishes here a lot too. It was, once again, surprisingly natural and fresh tasting. You’ll like it even if you don’t like kimchi. There was also this sweet bean of some kind. Great appetizers. The glass noodles wasn’t that great. It was too bland for me. That’s one natural tasting thing I couldn’t appreciate as much. I came here when it first opened and I couldn’t order everything I wanted off the menu, but it does offer something slightly different from the overcrowded space of Korean food. I’m almost willing to say that we have more and better Korean restaurants than Calgary. It’s always a proud feeling to not get beat by the Calgary food scene in every genre.
delicious food, fun atmosphere, and very friendly staff! I had a short rib stew I believe and it was amazing, the staff are also very helpful if you are not familiar with Korean food.
We just had a surge of Korean restaurants popping up on the southside of Edmonton these past months, Pocha Seoul is one of them! Adding to the ever growing Korean restaurants on 34th Ave sits this quaint space serving traditional dishes in a relaxed and casual atmosphere. Inside youll find a lightly decorated space with 3 private rooms and an open dining area where youll find more tables and seating. With K-pop as background music and three different screens also showing different music videos and kdramas, youre in for entertainment. Lets start by saying how amazing the service was at Pocha. We came on a Sunday evening, not the busiest time, but with 4 other tables along with us. We had 3 different ladies coming to check on us, whether it was refills, adjusting the heat of our grill or stirring the soups. They were all extremely friendly and gave a welcoming vibe making us feel very taken care of. Dak Bokkeum Tang – ($30) – 4/5 – Braised spicy chicken – This was so good. Perfect amount of spice to leave you feeling slightly numb. The amount of grease that was floating to the sides was alarming but mixed with rice with the juicy pieces of chicken definition of homey comfort food. Gamja Tang – M($27) – 2/5 – Pork Bone Soup – Any of my long time review readers will know that Gamjatang is my all time favorite soups ever, so youd understand my disappointment as I took my first slurp, which started and ended with oh. As full of color as the broth looked to have, this dish lacked spice and the typical heartiness. Abundant amount of pork pieces were scattered around the hot pot, sadly enough the meat wasnt tender enough either. This dish ultimately fell short of my expectations. The banchans! We were given the typical bean sprouts, daikon, kimchi and potatoes. First time I got the infamous potato and soy sauce side dish and I absolutely loved it. Kimchi was also really good, a good amount of balance between sour and heat. Dinner overall at Pocha was good. Portion sizes are huge, one of our dishes could have easily been shared between 4 people. Service was impeccable, they really made it personable. With that being said, the soup wasnt my favorite but the chicken dish was amazing. The menu is also quite extensive, so I wont be crossing Pocha off my list just yet. Will be back to try more!
