I’m so happy I stumbled on this little Japanese bakery! The owner was very kind and helpful, and his passion about his product really came across. I tried a red bean paste bun, a green tea melon bun, and some green tea cream puffs. It’s important to note that everything they sell is frozen (you can only get freshly baked items from 1:30-2:30 and at 5:00 pm). The red bean paste was absolutely delicious – smooth and with the perfect level of sweetness. The melon bun was also really good – a sweet, green tea flavoured coating wrapped around a lovely brioche style bun. The choux pastry was light and delicious, and the green tea whipped cream filling was almost cloud-like. I will definitely be back!
I LOVE Oguraya. Animethon in Edmonton had their melonpan in the past and I’ve heard of this bakery quite a few times so I was very excited to finally get to try melonpan for myself. We went there in the afternoon and found that they had quite a lot of items to offer so I was very excited! They have original, matcha, chocolate, and mocha melonpan and we tried it all. I found the melonpan in general to be good – not too sweet and not crumbly at all (unlike HK pineapple bun). The matcha flavour stood out to me the most but I found the chocolate to be too subtle I almost couldn’t taste it. The original and matcha would be your safest bet. I tried the kinako daifuku mochi which I also really liked – the dusting of soybean powder was different from the usual which I really enjoyed. It’s definitely worth a try! I tried curry beef bun which wasn’t too impressive to me because I found the curry too salty and too strong, and the bun itself was too soft that it didn’t seem right for a savoury bun.Oguraya quick-freezes their food items so they stay fresh and you’ll only need to defrost them for a bit before eating. It was my first time ever trying this for sweet buns and bread .. which isn’t a bad thing at all but I only wished that I could try their melonpan fresh out of the oven. Apparently they come out fresh at 3pm daily. I’ll definitely be back for that.Service was great – very nice and friendly and they were super sweet! It really felt comfortable and homey in there. This adds to my love for this bakery – not only do they have great buns, but also a great selection of items and a very sweet and friendly service.
