After driving into town to find I missed the start time on my yoga class, I decided to treat myself to some brekkie. I had plenty of time (it was supposed to be a 2 hour class after all!) so I went to Kim’s Cafe. I have been there before, the food is always good, but the service, at least in the past, has been hit and miss and if there is more than 1-2 people it often takes a very long time to get your food. This time I got the happy waitress and my food, while still prepared to order, came in a timely manner. I had my favourite, the Fruit Infusion French Toast, made with gluten-free bread that is actually worth eating. There were fresh blackberries, strawberries and blueberries with real whipped cream and powdered sugar-just enough but not too much. It came with 2 fresh plums (1 purple, 1 golden) and an orange slice. I had ordered a side of hash browns too. They were made with fresh, tiny potatoes, cooked then crisped just right. No frozen anything on this meal! The bill comes with a homemade cookie, which they swapped out for a gluten-free one when I verified it would be ok for me to eat. I recommend eating here, but leave yourself extra time just in case it’s a slow service day. Oh, and if you are looking for unique homestyle food-check out the daily specials, the other day it was hamburger macaroni soup!
We had started somewhere else and decided not to eat there because pre made sandwiches is not my thing. As we were driving back to the highway we saw Kim’s and decided to give it a shot. It was exactly what we were looking for a soup and sandwich place. Everything was delicious. The only things that didn’t make the rating a five was my soup could have been hotter and the service was a bit slow. I will go back.
Left unsatisfied. Boyfriend and I went today to get breakfast as we were craving a big breakfast. We both got poutine and their plate with eggs, hashbrowns and sausages. My boyfriends sunny side ups were still raw on the top. Gooey egg whites. Then my sausages were cold and had a strange floral taste to them. My scrambled eggs had the same odd taste. And so did both our hashbrowns! Hash browns looked like they would have been nice and crispy but looks can be deceiving. They seemed like they had been cripsy and one point, and then microwaved to be warm later on. Just soggy. The poutine was spot on. That poutine was amazing. But sadly, I won’t be going back because everything else tasted like floral/rose air freshener. I believe in going to small, independent businesses but next time we’ll be going to husky. She gave us the senior discount for our disappointment but I wish we wouldn’t have had to pay for the plates of strange tasting food. All I ate from that was the single black berry and tiny wedge of watermelon. This place gets one star.. Poutine was good, but not good enough to shake the disappointment I feel. Sorry Kim’s!
Serendipitous find. We were headed for the quilt store across the street, but found it closed and since it was near lunch we spied Kim’s Cafe across the street. Holy AWESOME!! I had the special, one friend had soup and another had fresh fruit and a butterhorn. We envied the cornbread as it passed by us going to another table but upon asking my friend who ordered soup if she would like some, she thought she had better pass, soup was enough. However Kim brought us each a slice of cornbread because she said she had to get rid of it because she needed to make more. Our food was fresh (no canned fruit here) tasty and the service was like home. Upon leaving we were told that we were entitled to our choice of cookie. I felt like a kid at the bakery, unable to choose!!I’m not sure how she does the delicious so well, but way to go KIM. I hope I get to go through Strathmore again so I can have another meal at her restaurant.
Cute and sweet!. What a gem! Having lived in Strathmore for a large portion of my life, and now living in the city, I know we are a bit lacking on interesting restaurants in town. This place had great food, selection, and prices and was very cute and comfortable. I highly recommend it to anyone! It isn’t far off the highway, so even non-locals can enjoy! The best part was the when the cheque came: you have to go for breakfast or lunch to find out why!
