Me and my boyfriend recently moved to 17th ave, and are attempting to try all the shawarma places within walking distance. Alibaba is our second favourite shawarma thus far. The value here is great, they give a free soda or baklava with each shawarma, and they have good portion sizes and tasty meat. The service has always been really pleasant, though sometimes it can be a bit slow. Their falafel is delicious! I really appreciate that they fry them to order, as I’ve definitely been served cold falafel at other places. They get a great crust on the outside, and it’s really nicely seasoned.
Great place with great food in an area that is swarming with Shawarma places this is my favorite! The beef skewers are great as are the mixed wraps. The staff are also great, recognizing me after my first visit…
Had the falafel platter and I must say that it was probably the best falafel I’ve ever had – crispy on the outside, and soft and fluffy in the middle with the perfect amount of seasoning. The best part is they’re fried fresh to order unlike most other places that do it ahead of time and then just reheat it in the oven. The rice and salad that accompany the platter was simple and fresh. As the other reviewer mentioned previously the fries are nothing to rave about just your typical frozen McCain’s fries. The sauces were good, although I was surprised that the garlic sauce had eggs in it since its normally prepared with just garlic, oil and lemon juice – it was still tasty though. Although the service was slow the owners were super nice and extremely accommodating to our party of five. I would definitely return here again to eat the falafels and to try the other dishes.
Best donair in the city!! Great service, clean, friendly. Did I mention though……best…donair…in…the…city!!! THEY also have tasty fries Lol…
Alibaba serves Afghan food (chaplee kabob and so forth, with excellent, excellent rice) as well as donair and shawarma and even some western items (burgers); it has undergone at least one change in ownership and I think that it’s now really firing on all cylinders. Today I got my usual which is the chaplee kabob plate, spicy minced beef patties with that excellent rice, and I also got something I’ve never bought there, a chicken shawarma for my partner. The chaplee was as good as always and a big serving, but what really astounded me was how DELICIOUS the shawarma was. They use the big square sheets of pita that crisp up so beautifully in the sandwich press, the chicken was fantastically seasoned and they have this creamy spicy sauce, like a spicy mayo, that brings it all together. It is fantastic- I’ll never go back to overpriced and underseasoned Shawarma Knight up the street now. That shawarma was massive and $8.99- I’m in love again 🙂
I think we found the best donair in Calgary – absolutely delicious. Randomly popped on the way home , now we’ll be regulars. I need 140 characters …. Fries good too
I loved it. The price was reasonable, and the food was tasty. Its staff were polite and helpful. It was bot as clean as I expect it but it was ok.
