After an amazing meal at Pio, I feel like I don’t quite know how I survived without Peruvian food before. I started with a glass of Chicha Morada, which is an absolutely addictive purple corn drink that is perfectly sweet and beautifully spiced. After much deliberation I ordered the Pio Con Yuca Frita. My plate arrived with a generous portion of tender, juicy chicken and deliciously crisp cassava fries. I also sampled my friend’s sides, which were the sweet plantains with feta cheese (amazing) and the sweet potato fries (also tasty but not my favourite of the three). Our waiter, who was incredibly personable, knowledgable, and friendly throughout the evening, kindly gave our table a sampling of all four sauces. Each was delicious: my favourites were probably the Pio green (which had a deliciously earthy, smoky quality to it) and the Rocoto (which provided a nice kick). My other friend ordered the Lomo Saltado, which I have to say was absolutely amazing – tender, incredibly flavourful slices of beef with a delectable sauce. For dessert we decided to try the picarones, which were four airy and crisp sweet potato donuts that came with a delicious malty, anise-flavoured syrup – definitely worth a try! Without a doubt, I’ll be back to Pio again and again.

A group of us came to Pio for my sister in laws birthday and we all enjoyed it immensely. Her family is South American and they swear by this place. Now I see…and taste why.The whole family started by ordering multiple jugs of the chicha morada which is an interestingly tasty drink made from purple corn mixed with pineapple and lime juice. I would recommend giving it a try if you want an authentic beverage. If you are looking for something boozy definitely order yourself a pisco sour. To eat I first shared a large order of the ceviche with my parents and it was excellent! The peppery citrus married so well with the fish and onions,l. The fresh and sweet corn was a nice contrast while the crunchy homemade corn nuts gave the dish a wonderful texture. I also quite like the yucca fries that come along side with the order. My main was suggested to me by my brother and boy am I glad I listened. The Lomo a la pobre is a classic Peruvian dish that lit up my taste buds! The beef (lomo saltado), although overcooked, was very flavourful. There were some nicely cooked yucca fries and fried plantains on the side. The piece de resistance is the fried egg on top of rice that oozes yolk and gives the dish a beautiful richness. The service was very friendly and efficient considering the small restaurant was completely full. I can’t wait to get back and try their famous rotisserie chicken.
