Would it kill you to smile?. Ordered a large latte – they have no flavor options :(, and it was like I was rumplestilskin asking them to give me their first born. The woman at the counter was beautiful, but her miserable expression made her look mean, frustrated and not happy to be serving me.Once the Latte was done, I was firstly surprised by the size. A large latte is $4.50 and the equivalent size to a starbucks venti – for the same amount I could have gotten a grande at the bucks and I felt a bit ripped off. I tested, and it was way too strong. I asked how many shots of espresso were put in, and I was told 2 (for a latte that small, this was way too many). I asked for them to re-make the latte with only one shot, and while they did do as I asked, there was no ‘sorry bout that’, just an angry face.I have no problem paying for premium coffee – I do it all the time. I DO have a problem paying for bad service. This is not the first time I have been to Fuel for Gold, and I told myself the last time that if the service was still bad, I would not be coming back. Unfortunately, they proved me right today, and I will not be buying anymore coffee from them.
Over rated. They sell the idea of healthy food, but its not that great or healthy for anyone who actually knows anything about nutrition. and they were out of shepherds pie by 12 last time i went!!! what a disappointment when their only food item for the day is gone by lunch time 🙂
Rude. Let me start out by saying that the staff are horribly, horribly unfriendly. They seem irritated just by the presence of people wanting to get food. I’ve gotten lunch there probably about 15 times over the course of my time at the U of C and not once did I get a decent smile out of any of them.As for the food, the breakfast is pretty good, and the lunches are always delicious with healthy portions that fill you up. I definitely don’t feel guilty after eating there. My friend unfortunately found a hair in her food on one occasion but hey, extra protein right? If the staff were nicer, I’d probably eat there more regularly.
Coffee. It has been a while since I’ve been back to Fuel for Gold; in needing a caffeine fix and not willing to go to Tim Horton’s for coffee, I headed to Fuel for Gold – plus it gave me a chance to see if they still served Phil & Sebastian coffee. On the TV menu, they still display Phil and Sebastian, but their cups are just plain white cups (they used to have P&S cups).Since it is still summer semester plus after 1 pm, the coffee wasn’t that fresh or hot (more on the ‘hot’ lukewarm side). In fact, I found it somewhat disappointing, but granted it is summer semester plus on a friday afternoon. I’ll have to try this place again when fall/winter semester kicks into high gear (that way their coffee turnover is higher).05 Aug, 2012Phil and Sebastians – Could it be ???. Since Fuel for Gold opened last year (?) I’ve never really had a chance to try it. Since it is the summer semester and Mac Hall isn’t clogged with way ward students, I decided to give Fuel for Gold a try.I only wanted a cup of coffee, but lo and behold, what did I spot behind the counter ? A bag of Phil and Sebastians coffee beans ? I had to do a double take, but yes !!!!!!!!!!! P&S coffee on campus ! I’ve been there on more than one occasion for my coffee fix, and it doesn’t disappoint. Deep rich roast of P&S beans, it can’t be beat. At $2.50 a cup, it is well worth the cost.I’ve yet to try any of their foods, but it does look yummy. My only question is : why on earth do the 2 timmies still have long lineups for their 10W30 grade motor oil they insist on calling coffee ? It boggles the mind. I guess there are lemmings on campus.
Fuel for Gold?. How can frozen nutrient free vegetables be fuel for gold? How can cold, oil laden eggs and sausage be good for our Canadian athletes? 10 minutes for a pancake, I dont think so. I don’t get it, is this yet another marketing scheme designed to generate income? I’ve been eating Fuel for Gold lunches for the past 3 years. The dinning centre location was by far the best I had. Variety was king, the chef they had there knew what he was talking about, and he even asked what clients would like to see on the menu!!! It seems that the people at the Canadian Sports centre have sacrificed quality in the name of profit. I rarely see a familiar face at the Mac Hall location, I always have to wait in line for what seems like hours only to be exposed to the profanity and sexist rantings of the what seems to be some sort of wannabe chef in the back, where did they get this guy? Where is the fresh bread I used to get at the dining centre, where is the smile I used to get just for choosing Fuel for Gold, where is the quality food I had become accustomed too and what about the variety? They had me, they lost me, and they wont get me back. Shame on you.
Chowder without the calories. Came by today after seeing Fuel for Gold comment on Yelp that they had chowder. Best of all – it’s made without cream. Small bowl full of clams cost only $3.50. So nice to be able to choose from a variety of food and not worry if it’s healthy or not. Great service too.Update – I tried a chickpea soup – tasted like spiced water with hard chickpeas. The turkey and vegetable soup was very good but I bit into a little stone. The cauliflower puree was a bit bland. The only soup I’ve had that was great was the chowder. hittingthesauce.wordpress.com
The best coffee in NW Calgary.. There are good sandwiches, salads and pastries here, but it’s the coffee that makes Fuel For Gold such a magnificent gift to the University of Calgary. Phil & Sebastian beans made with great expertise on a La Marzocco FB 80- you won’t find better espresso on any university campus anywhere in the world. Yes it’s more expensive than the sewer water at Tim Hortons, because the best coffee isn’t cheap.
