Some food with soul, despite Mac Hall. This is a place in MacEwan Hall (at U of C) which serves some righteous food. In a corporate-run food court it can be tricky to find good eats, but here I haven’t been let down yet. Their Pho is quite scrumptious, and always uplifts me when I need some comfort food. They also serve a combo with rice noodles (and shredded iceberg lettuce and carrots, with crushed peanuts) and a choice of one or two sides, from a selection which is not quite as spectacular as the Pho, but well worth the price. Just make sure to take the special sauce for your noodles!
Now that finals are on …. I usually don’t head over to Mac Hall often during the regular semester, as it is teaming with students and lineups at noon are lengthy. However, now that it is finals, crowds at Mac Hall slowly diminish as students exit for the Christmas break.I’ve haven’t tried Noodle and Grill Express in a while, so I headed over for lunch.I ordered the Special A – fried rice, fried noodles, and choice of spicy pork or honey pork. I picked the honey pork, as it was deep fried.Let’s face facts, this is mall food, so my expectations weren’t high. Given that, I really did enjoy the noodles, first being that it consisted mainly of noodles (not like their chinese neighbours, whose fried noodles consist mostly of bean sprouts). There were some veggies sprinkled in (cabbage, celery, green onions, bean sprouts), but noodles was dominant. The veggies were cooked well as they still had some crunch to them – plus vibrant colouring. The honey pork was good, the pork chunks were cut consistently so that meant cooking would be more even. All the pork chunks had a crunchy exterior and tender/moist pork inside. The honey sauce was ok, but I found it a tad sweet for my tastes. The fried rice was the biggest disappointment. It was sticky, and devoid of any flavour.Lunch came in a half clam shell (and it was nice to see they filled the larger half with food instead of the small half), and at $5.50 (incl gst), it was a decent value for lunch.
One of Mac Hall’s best options. Combo B, no lettuce thank you, with spicy beef and grilled chicken… or lemongrass beef and spicy pork… excellent repast in a sea of mediocre options. I eat here on most of my teaching days and am almost always happy with what i get. Huge portions too.One thing: unlike most viet places, Noodle and Grill does rice pretty poorly. Stick with the rice vermicelli and you’re set.
