The bento box is pretty decent. The pre-made items are not as good. Order the fresh stiff. They had some green tea and strawberry Swiss rolls that were a fun treat.
Friendly staff. The people at Umi Sushi are really friendly and the mini-bento box is probably the best value since you get a fairly large portion of tempura, beef / chicken, and rice. The bubble tea is usually cheaper here than at Happy Hut so I always get my bubble tea here as well.
Good offerings. This is another place that opened on campus a while back in which I never got a chance to try until recently (due to the fact that during the fall/winter semester it is busy with students).Since it is summer, there isn’t much of a lineup at this place during lunch, so I thought I would give it a shot.I bought the full bento box, $7.99 plus gst. They give you a piece of paper and you fill out what you want, for example for protein you can choose beef or chicken, and what you want for sushi (california rolls, …) and other items.I picked the beef teriyaki, california rolls, and vegetable tempura – consisting of onion, broccoli, and yams.Right off the bat they do fill the container full of food. The beef wasn’t bad at all, it was tender (for pre cooked), but I found the teriyaki sauced to be abit off, or maybe I am too used to places like Kobe Beef or Edo’s teriyaki sauce. The vegetable tempura, again for pre cooked, was ok. However, she put some tempura sauce and the bottom portion of the tempura pieces were soggy because of it. Otherwise, it was ok.I felt the star of the lunch had to be the california roll. Yes, again it is pre made but it was kept cold enough so it still tasted fresh. I like the filling to rice ratio, it was well proportioned, and the pieces I had tasted fresh and good.Overall, cost wise it is a tad on the high side, but once in a while it is a definite treat,
So happy to have them on campus! I’ve visited their other locations located in malls in Calgary and pretty much love the food, concept, and service. U of C is always busy but they do a good job at rocking out the orders with a smile.
Affordability. You get what you pay for. Sometimes I’m lucky and get sushi when they just made it, and it’s pretty good.
If you like hair in your bubble tea and less than acceptable sushi then go ahead and eat at umi express.
Fast Bento and Bubble Tea to Go. Although the flavours are limited, the slush isn’t always that slushie, its the only place on campus to get your bubble tea fix, so for now, I’ll take it.This place is brand new, and you can tell they’ve still got some kinks to iron out. Always a cluster of people waiting for bubble tea or their bento boxes around the till. I haven’t had a bento box yet, but they look really good, and are priced pretty decent. They’ve got the bento selections ready to go, in heated trays behind the counter, so you just tell them what you want and they fill up your box. I believe you get a choice of rice, teriyaki, sushi, tempura, and salad. Sounds like a lot of food. They’ve also got lots of ready to go sushi made in the refrigerator that you can just grab, along with edamame beans, or seaweed salad. I loved the seaweed salad.Great place for campus eats, cheap, and helps add some culture to the food court.
