I heard saffron was opened by the same people who own rasoi in millwoods which if it’s the same place I have also reviewed, I really enjoy their food. So I was looking forward to checking out this resturant since I live in the west end and I enjoy the convinece of droping into WEM and grabing some Edo for lunch. To my knowledge edmonton has never had a east Indian offering in any of it’s food courts. The place is quite nice looking, the most modern and slick looking vendor around. I decided to go with their 2 item combo which comes with rice, nann and two items of your choice for $8. Now this was a bad selection on my part since I had not seen their serving containers and after seeing them knew I should of just gone with the rice/butter chicken order instead of butter chicken and a beef samosa. The butter chicken tasted good for food court food in a mall, the main problem was there was hardly any of it, take a look at the pictures I posted and you will see. Mixing it with ones rice is no good as you just end up eating dry rice due to the lack of butter chicken and sauce. Then one still has a nann and nothing to eat it with. Also the butter chicken is not in the same style as the heavy cream butter chicken some places do, I think this is more of a south Indian butter chicken which is made with the red sauce, I could be wrong. The Samosas was okay, to be honest it wasent bad but not as good as the samosas one can get elsewhere. I should note I have had better samosas at the husky gas station downtown, the one with the 24 hour wand car wash I go to, their samosas can be amazingly good when one considers you just bought it at 3 am at a gas station in Edmonton. I think this is a great concept but for me personally I won’t be back, the quality is okay when you consider the options avalible around. It’s better than the quality of KFC however lower than the quality of Edo. At the end of the meal I took a bite or two of naan which I had nothing to eat it with just to try the nann. It’s decent but had no butter on it. I think they need to rethink things a bit. The naan is enough to use up on one dish or two dishes and one dish is far from being enough to eat with the rice. Given that for a extra $5 one can eat a lunch buffet at rasoi, dawaat or the Indian place on white ave I have reviewed. I would not recommend makeing a special trip to WEM just for the food but if your there and hungry while your shopping? Give them a try.
