Went to Kam Do years back and had terrible service and stale bread. As years have gone by and I was in the area I decided to give them another go. Big mistake. I approached the counter and was greeted by two employees who continued their conversation for some time before stopping and glaring at me. No hello, no welcome, no how may I help you. I requested two cakes from the display. Still no reply, just rather unprofessionally went about packing the cakes. I paid and left. Cakes were brought home and refrigerated for a few hours. I went to eat the cake that same night only to find that the fruit was days or even weeks old and had grey mold all over. Even the icing and whipped cream was molding and appeared to be very old. This had to have been at least a week old. For having terribly rude and unprofessional staff and for yet again selling me a mold cake, I vow never to return to this terrible place.
A pretty good bakery with lots of fresh buns. I think they’re famous for their wintermelon pastries but they have a wide assortment of lotus paste and red bean paste pastries with salted egg yolk or without. I tried their ham and egg bun for breakfast and found it to be really fresh. I was surprised to find mayo in it which isn’t the norm but it still tasted good. I bought some wintermelon pastries and lotus paste with thousand year old egg pastries for my hubby and he enjoyed them. I didn’t taste those so can’t comment. The service was pretty good and they are a well oiled machine and used to crowds. They get through the cashier lines pretty quick. They only accept cash so make sure you have some before heading over there.
The best pineapple buns!! Perfectly sweet, buttery crust on the softest fluffiest bread!!!! Their wife cakes and taro pastries are bomb too.
We love their coconut tarts, smooth egg tarts and Portugese egg tarts. I always buy something when I am in the neighbourhood. It’s great that they replenish tge shelves even late in the afternoon.
Had their lotus seed salted yolk pastry. Delicious, cheap, no complaints. Just make sure to have something to catch all the pastry flakes that will fall because you can’t eat this without making a big mess.
I decided I had to get a box of wive’s cakes for my dad considering all the hype about this place. Dad’s favorite pastry in the whole world are Lo-po bang. So what was his verdict? The pastry is very nice and flaky but the winter melon stuffing is not right. Traditionally, it should have small chunks of candied winter melon and not this sugary winter melon paste that theirs is.
We were visiting Van and we knew that alot of asians love their lo por bangs. So before we left Van, we decided to go get some for our relatives and friends back in Calgary. We ended up buying a couple dozens. And we asked a lady there if we can get a few more bags ( it was fully packed into 2 big bags and one small grocery type of thin bag) so we asked if we could get 1 more of the nicer bags to gift it out. Also my sis was flying to a diff city than us, so we thought itd be better if she can take at least one of the nicer thicker bags. So the lady who didnt serve us said it costed money. So my mom said thats fine. The lady then was making faces and decided to take the thin bag and switch with a thicker bag. My dad nicely asked her to leave that bag in just in case we needed it. She made a face and was not happy doing so. This bakery mostly serves tourist or ppl out of van, i think it is a little bit of rip off to charge ppl..we had like over 20 boxes stuffed into 2 bags. I also think the owner may need to reconsider this lady there.
