My favorite sushi place when visiting Richmond!!. Ever since my first time visiting Umi Sushi, I have absolutely loved their Chicken Teriyaki Bento Box… The food is delicious, and the service is always great.. I think it’s so clever that they have incorporated the pager system for when your food is ready, and it is service with a smile 🙂
EDIT – I revisited pretty soon for that udon again, and I think my last visit was a lucky one in a million lottery draw. This round’s udon…not so great. Quality of food greatly reduced…by just a few more customers. The egg was hot, made in a hurry. The udon somewhat soggy. Very disappointing._____________________________Wow. I was wondering if it was the same place, but the website seems to be right, at least the storefront looks the same.If I’m reading the previous reviews right, something’s definitely changed about this place, or maybe I haven’t sat on a dish yet.Walked by today and saw something I hadn’t tried before: Kamatama. I was skeptical it’d really be handmade udon with this sauce but the onsen egg tempted me, as did my hunger. Then came the surprise.Though what I ordered was simple, the flavour and textures really stood out beautifully and authentic. I didnt order sushi since it looked premade, and well, it IS an ‘udon bar’ right? The onsen egg was made right, cooled in the fridge after being cooked, making the yolky insides somewhat chewy, just the way I liked it. On top of a batch of extra chewy udon, its texture and consistency only achievable through kneading and beating with human hands like those handcrafted Chinese noodles. Topped off with chopped green onions typically a great combination with the onsen egg dish by itself.I devoured the dish and vowed to come back for more. Haven’t had udon this good even at Applause!
I ordered the Nabeyaki udon, which is a very common Japanese dish, udon in soup with chicken, egg, kani (imitation crab), spinach and 1 or 2 pieces of prawn tempura. What they served was a bowl of udon in soup, and a separate bowl where ALL of the ingredients were deep fried!! The chicken, veggies (broccoli, carrots, yam), kani, which is not at all what Nabeyaki udon is. How hard is it to cook them in broth instead, since they have to cook the udon anyways? The menu and overall appearance looked promising but the food was incredibly disappointing. Would think twice about revisiting this place!
Bad. Ordered Beef Udon as imaged on their menu board. Well, if you put something on the menu board it must be good right? No. Beef was dry. Noodles are ordinary. Soup was ordinary, more on the salty side. Bad value. Less than mediocre quality.
Not that cheap. They sell premade sushi ( you can also order special sushi and put in what you want but it seems more expensive). The premade sushi in the open fridge dries up the rice and makes the rice hard. I find that that the spicy sushi lacks flavoring is is extremely mushy. It also isnt very cheap…if you want quick sushi go to togo sushi. It is cheaper and you get freshly made sushi
They didn’t have the dish I wanted ’cause they apparently ran out of ingredients. The order took super long and the food was sub-par. Their side dishes – tempura was fried beyond recognition…all I saw was a blob of batter and didn’t realize it was a piece of chicken until I peeled back the thick greasy batter….disgusting. Needless to say this was my first and last time eating at Umi.
Tried the Mini Umi Udon (with Beef Teri) today for lunch and it was mediocre. The soup was super oily, and the udon was mushy. Plus a simple order like this took surprisingly long! Cheap but not good value, especially with Koryo around the corner. Hopefully the bento box is better!
