Tentatsu was our go-to place for lunch recently, after my appointment in the Burnaby Heights area of East Hastings. After catching a parking space in the no-charge Municipal Parking Lot around the corner, we were into the restaurant shortly after it opened at 11 am. We chose booth seating alongside the longest wall, and were promptly brought menus, and then mugs of hot, green tea. Service was fine throughout our stay, though very impersonal (but we did get a smile or two, when we spoke!!), it was timely and efficient, and tea mugs were always kept full. We liked the decor (colour scheme, lighting, table arrangement, etc.) – overall ambiance though was a touch spoiled by the music playing, imo, it did not seem to match the rather nice decor of the place.Heres what was ordered, and shared: (w/menu numbers and descriptions of each) #212 – Spicy Agedashi Tofu #226 – Kaki Fry (breaded oysters) #231 – Ika Sugatayaki (squid, Robato BBQ style) #252 – Deluxe Sashimi #261 – Roll Combo A (California, tuna, salmon) #343 – Seafood Okonomiyaki (pancake).Food presentations, portion sizes, and preparations provided no big surprises, or major disappointments, but that said, no big wows either. Good: the sashimi preparation – it looked good, daughter and I really enjoyed the freshness, nice textures, and flavours of the ingredients. Ok: agedashi tofu (tasted a touch overdone, with the tofu not as soft & creamy as expected) rolls (presentation lacking, but decently-made – quite flavourful & tasty) squid (presentation a little sloppy, flavour & taste fine) Poor: oysters (chopped pieces, breaded – making for lots of pieces of breaded covering, with little oyster meat in each) seafood pancake (thick pastry, crusty edge, a little doughy inside, an appearance of lots of ingredients, saw and tasted few – it looked good, but lacked in ingredients, and preparation).A first-time dining experience at Tentatsu – overall, we had fun, but must admit I left a touch disappointed with the food preparations.

It was my first time coming to this location. The service is quiet slow even though there weren’t very many people in the restaurant. I also found the rice pretty mushy and the taste was odd. However, for 6 people, it was under $50. I think the price really reflects the quality of this place.

Used to come to this restaurant when it was called Yo Sushi. It looks like it has changed owners. Decor hasn’t changed from when it was the previous restaurant. In fact, I probably wouldn’t have come here had I known it had changed hands, but since we were already seated before I realized I decided to give them a whirl. This place offers exceptional value! We ordered a couple of rolls and an order of assorted sashimi. My goodness, were the slices ever thick! The rolls were generously portioned and we were delightfully surprised about how large they were.Service was appropriate and to my expectation. With all the Japanese restaurants on Hastings, Tentatsu definitely sets themselves apart with the generous portions.

Excellent value for money. Good food and huge portions. We were headed to Sushi Oumo but it was closed. Tentatsu was near by and open so we decided to give it a go. It was displaying a ‘grand opening’ sign and looked relatively new inside. We thought it was likely to be clean and reasonably fresh. It was…The menu was rather large with multiple create your own combo options for $8.95. My friends ordered two of these and a normal bento box for their kids. We ordered the same bento for the kids and a selection of dishes for ourselves. The bento came with chicken teriyaki Don (rice), udon noodle soup, agadashi tofu, salad, ebi sunomono, miso soup, and tempura. It was huge! There was actually a full size portion of each dish. I’m not sure how one person could finish it all. On top of the size, the food was rather tasty. The teriyaki chicken had a lovely crispy skin and tender meat with a tangy sweet sauce. The tofu was lightly fried and melted in your mouth. The ebi sunomono was light and refreshing. We all ended up sharing the bento. The rest of our meal:- The wakame (seaweed) salad was twice as big as in normal restaurants. It tasted as expected and didn’t dissapoint.- The sashimi slices were extra large and could have been a meal by themselves. It was fresh and delicious. – The beef yakisoba came out sizzling and was full of flavour. My favourite dish of the night. – The spicy tuna hand roll was more tuna rice and tasted just right. Spicy… but not too spicy. – The dynamite roll was sliced a bit too thin for me but was still pleasing to the eye and palate. The servers were nice and friendly and did their jobs without any issues or attitude (which you may sometimes get at asian restaurants). We all left feeling full and content with a surprising amount left in our wallets. This would normally get a 3.5 from me = I liked it a lot. Nothing too special or different. However, the quality of meal and service (especially putting up with the 4 roudy kids and multiple requests) makes this place a 4 in my books.
