Could So Easily Be Better. This restaurant’s best attribute is its location across from the Butterfly Garden and down the street from Victoria’s biggest tourist attraction, Butchart Garden. It is a general-interest restaurant, with traditional foods sprinkled with a few attempts at novelty and invention. The three foods we tried were, for the most part, acceptable, though the meat patty in a burger was tough and overcooked. The mediterranean sandwich (on sourdough; let’s call that inventive) was just okay, not nearly as interesting as it could have been if, for example, the pesto had not been so thickly slathered on. Best feature was the one dessert we tried, a rhubarb crumble topped with soft-serve ice cream. I’m sorry that several reviewers don’t like this place because it isn’t a Smiity’s anymore but things change and change is good! The menu at Sassy’s is old school; burgers, liver, steaks, veal (no calamari or nachos that I saw) BUT we went because Sunday is Prime Rib night (while it lasts, according to the sign) we got there at 7:30 thinking the special was still on, the outside chalk board still proclaimed prime rib… they’d run out at 5:30! We ordered from the menu; veal with mushroom gravy, beef dip – they are one if the few restaurants that still serves potato salad! the vegetable was fresh garden beets, which I love (how did they know?) For beverages we ordered Arnold Palmers (lemonade and ice tea) which the server had never heard of but was delighted to get us (this is typical in this part of the country). In all it was a flash back to home cooking and 50s style road side cafs. We’ll definitely return’

3 Strikes. As a family (grandma, my son and myself and occasionally grandpa or aunties) we used to go to this restaurant when it was Smitty’s all the time. I used to go regularly in high school and the quality of the food was consistent, the staff was eager to help and the service was never slow. In becoming Sassy’s, this restaurant has completely changed. I swear the staff might be the same, but their attitudes and abilities to help are not the same. I am sad to write this review because Smitty’s used to be affordably good, family friendly and a quick place to grab a bite. I have to say we will not be returning after our last experience. We arrived on a Thursday evening (restaurant wasn’t extremely busy). We were seated by the hostess (who was the most helpful employee there that evening) pretty quickly. That was the fastest part of the evening. It took 10 minutes to get a drink order in. We were hungry and made a decision on food pretty quickly. Unfortunately, the waitress didn’t show up for another 10 minutes. My mom asked about a turkey dinner but (at prime dinner time) was informed that there was no more turkey. Did I mention this was American Thanksgiving and what if you were in a turkey dinner mood? No, no turkey for you! My mom ordered roast beef dinner, my son had a waffle and a sausage and I had a melty sandwich thing. With what might be the worst potato salad I’ve ever seen (but I’ll cover that later). So we waited. We spent over an hour there, by the way on a night when we didn’t have time to wait around (airport White Spot next time for speed and happy servers). 20 minutes to order drinks and food and another 30 to wait for mediocre food. The food arrived after we seriously contemplated leaving to get Subway sandwiches instead. My mom’s dinner was lukewarm, the gravy congealing, the green onions for the baked potato had been under the heatlamp so they were all wilted and the meat was tough. My son’s waffle was the only decent thing they served us. His sausage (his one, lone sausage) took another 3 minutes or so and even then it was tough and not very appetizing looking (after the waitress claimed it was a fresh, new sausage). My sandwich was kind of terrible, The menu described it as having fried onions but they put a TON of strong red onions on it which I had to take off. My potato salad was a weird yellow colour, and there were no red potatoes to be seen in what was supposedly a red potato salad. Just appalling when I have had better food from airport cafeterias and truck stop diners. I don’t like to complain but we won’t go back.

Not good. I went with my wife and two small children for dinner on Sunday night. It was thanksgiving and I was looking forward to a hot turkey dinner because we were not making one for the 4 of us. We arrived and were greeted by a woman who appeared to be under the influence. She showed us to a table and threw the menus onto the table, she was also throwing dishes and cutlery into the bussing station making quite a crash. She was completely out of it. Then another server (she has a nice accent) arrived and took our food order, she was very good. The food came, after a very long wait and everything was luke warm. the only thing that was hot was the roasted potatoes on my plate, and most items were very salty. I am very happy that none of us got ill from eating the food. The cleanliness of this restaurant has gone way down hill recently giving us an uncomfortable feeling about what the kitchen looks like. It is really too bad because there are not a lot of reasonably priced, family friendly restaurants in the Brentwood Bay area.Give this restaurant a pass next time you are going out. Unless they make some major changes it is not worth the gamble.
