Seated in the conservatory of the Butchart residence, overlooking a private garden, my mother and I were delighted with Afternoon Tea. As a prelude to our tour of the gardens, we savored berry trifle followed by delicious sandwiches, pastries and cakes accompanying refreshing cups of lemon grass and green teas. The selections were impeccably plated and served. If I ever return, it will not be soon enough.
I went for high tea with my husband for our wedding anniversary. The food was just as I remembered and expected. Typical high tea fare, sandwiches and cakes, and nostalgic and fun. The service was polar!! Our waiter? We felt like he really ignored us because we were young and not the typical baby boomers loaded with cash. He was a middle-aged gentleman with an accent. And yet he was VERY attentive to the table literally right next to us. You think we don’t tip because we’re young? Well buddy you earned a mediocre tip by ignoring us. Didn’t even come by and ask how the food tasted. However I will give MAJOR props to the hostess. She was very busy and seated us promptly, but next to a screaming infant. We didn’t say anything, but she instantly came back and asked us if we’d like a different table, to which we said yes. She had dark curled hair, about chin length, with dark eyes. She deserves a raise, I’ve never had such a polite lovely hostess such as her. She was the highlight of our dining experience.
Enjoy the garden and avoid the high tea. I see other reviews of the high tea on here and I agree that it definitely could be better for the very pricey treat. Much of our tray seemed stale and dry. Our tea was delicious and the server was very nice, but for the cost, we could have gone out for a nice lunch and also had coffee and dessert at any upscale restaurant. Next time we are bringing our own treats and will have a nice picnic in the beautiful settings.
The food is passable but hardly worth the price. they have a captive audience (many of them hungry American tourists) and charge too much, like most ‘resort’ places – a shame, really
Dinner dining hours are archaic!!. This restaurant won’t let you make a reservation past 8pm – how utterly archaic! On a beautiful summer evening, one might like to walk the gardens after work and then sit down to dinner later on, like 9-ish, when we’d normally be dining at home after a bit of post-office recreation. I have eaten there and the food was acceptable but seemed to be aiming right down the middle (for tourists) rather than aiming higher for a local audience. Their inflexible hours are a frustration to us and our European guests, who are far more accustomed to later dinners. As a season pass holder, I am frustrated by the Draconian hours.
Nice Surprise, Excellent Food and Service.. Both our seafood dinners were impressive, nice size portions, fantastic taste and excellent service. Too bad you have to pay for the Butchard entrance fee each time you would like to visit this restaurant.
Afternoon tea!. High tea at butchart gardens was lovely! the savory bites need a bit of work… 3 out of the 4 of us at our table didn’t care for most of the savory items. it was just ok. by the time we ate the first tier, we were full.the sweets were wonderful! the scones were perfectly crunchy on the outside, moist on the inside, and the lemon creme was the perfect accompaniment. the lemon tart was also a favourite.the ambiance and place settings suggest fine dining, but the service was flawed. for example, the server reached across me from the left with her right hand, which is a big no no in fine dining. no big deal, it’s just an observation.for the price and surroundings, it was well worth it, especially considering the fairmont empress is over $60!!
