While celebrating a birthday with friends at Zanzibar our server accidentally spilled hot water on me as she was passing it to the person across the table from me. I was left with two dime sized burns, one of which blistered. I chose not to make a big scene at the time as accidents happen but when our table was hit with an 18% auto gratuity (because another couple joined our party of 6) I was left with some feelings of resentment. When I phoned the restaurant to let the owner know that there had been an incident my messages were ignored. I finally reached her via email over a week later and was utterly shocked by the unprofessional response. The owner blamed me and said that I was not paying attention and later stated that she poured hot water on her own hand and while it hurt it was not severe and therefore I was fine, and no further action was needed. She has also messaged me on other restaurant review sites and called me liar liar pants on fire and said that all of her staff are laughing at me. Im amazed that this establishment is still in operation such terrible leadership.
Zanzibar specialties are North African Dishes, unusual spices if you’ve never had this type of cuisine. The spices aren’t hot but an interesting blend of cinnamon, nutmeg and some curries as well. I had the North African Tagine with chicken pieces and lamb meat balls with an array of vegetables all cooked together with a beautiful saffron rice to add. This dish is slow cooked and is stew like but not so much as to loose the texture of the ingredients, with a nicely spiced sauce it is well worth trying. Run by a lovely couple they make you feel very welcome in this quaint restaurant whether inside or out on the deck the staff is attentive friendly and helpful. They also have vegetarian dishes to make sure everyone has selection and enjoys their night out. Have an Afagato for desert, espresso with ice cream is a perfect end to a terrific experience.
