If you need to escape the tourist insanity on Water Street, head east and around the corner onto Carrall and into this sharp little place for some unique tastes. I was delighted to be handed the happy hour menu so all my snacks where half price! I started with 2 Baos (is the plural of Bao still Bao?), the Lechon (roasted pork) and the Kare kare short rib. Both were delicious and the buns were pan fried a perfect golden. The Lechon offered some crispy bits. I’m not sure what made the short ribs Kare kare (typically peanut butter and fish sauce) but it was tender and tasty just the same. I had a refreshing Daikon salad which was very good. I finished up with the Lumpia which was the most authentically Filipino of the offerings (this is fusion so authenticity is not an issue). They arrived hot and crispy with two dipping sauces, both sweet but one slightly spicy. Nicely done. On a previous visit, I came with some Filipinos and we landed here during brunch on Sunday. I think the Filipinos were a little nonplussed paying $20ish for what they might have had at home, although all the choices came in largish portions with beautiful tomatoes and greens. For me, I had the chicken and waffles which was outstanding! This was great fried chicken, hot, crisp and moist inside. The waffles had Ube in the mix (purple yam) which admittedly made them a little dry but that is what chicken and syrup are for! A little pricey but this is Gastown. Chic comfortable place in Gastown style with some interesting art on the walls. Service was very friendly and attentive on both our visits. yeswereeatingagain.com
