3.5/5 Curry Beef BrisketRoasted Rack of Crispy PorkSoy ChickenOMG. I wonder how many chefs in Vancouver got inspiration from its roasted pork? The skin is absolutely crispy, which I like it very much. And the soy chicken is so open-minded. The softness of the chicken is like eating tofu!! Truly cantonese favourite!!
My coworkers and I came here to have lunch on a Friday afternoon. It was extremely difficult to find a parking spot on the streets. We drove around and around and finally we gave up looking for street parking. We parked at a pay parking lot on Keefer Street and walked to the restaurant. The restaurant was full of people and some customers were waiting at the entrance. We were lucky to have a table right away. We ordered food right away because we spent time to look for parking already. We had to go back to work within an hour. We ordered a dish of gai lan with soy sauce and garlic, curry beef brisket with rice, bbq duck and bbq pork with rice and roasted pork and soy sauce chicken with rice. We all shared these dishes, so we could try different types of food together. Usually people ordered their own dishes. The gai lan with garlic and soy sauce tasted great! The veggies were fresh. The chef cooked the veggies with oil, garlic and soy sauce. The dish of curry beef brisket with rice was extraordinary. The curry sauce was a little bit spicy to add extra flavour to the dish. It definitely went well with the rice. The other two dishes were also rice but we could try all four types of meat: BBQ duck, BBQ pork, roasted pork and soy sauce chicken. All of them tasted great especially the skin of the roasted pork was very crispy!! Due to the crowd at the restaurant, the customer service was just average. The servers were so busy that we wanted to get extra spoons and chopsticks. We just stood up and grabbed these cutlery by ourselves. We understood that the servers tried their best to serve all customers. If you are craving for Chinese food in Chinatown, I would recommend you to try this restaurant.
Video review on my youtube channel: vancity food crew chinatown bbq (if you wanna see the food in HD)This place is legit. I went to try it out because there isn’t a lot of really delicious asian barbecue places downtown, usually they are all in Richmond. This place delivers however. We ordered the soya chicken, bbq duck, and bbq pork. The bbq pork is standard, I’ve had better. The other two are really good. Great skin and flavour. I returned a week later and tried the roast pork, its simply amazing. The crunch is proper hard and the meat is juicy. I also hear their beef brisket curry is good, so I shall try that next time.
I love restaurants that not only have great food but have a great story also. The proprietor of Chinatown BBQ, Carol Lee, is part of a movement to preserve and restore the cultural heritage of a rapidly changing Chinatown. While restaurants like Juke and Mamie Taylor’s move into the area and restaurants like Hon’s Wun Tun House are moving out, we are in real danger of losing important Vancouver history and history of the Asian community. As a non Asian I have spent many pleasurable hours exploring the area and enjoying it’s sights and especially the food. As a lover of history and our cultural diversity, I would hate to see it go and so I applaud this effort.Chinatown BBQ is a Cantonese style barbecue restaurant and as you walk in the front door your mouth will begin to water immediately. You are met by the iconic barbecue case of duck and roast pork and chicken all leaving little doubt as to what you will want to eat! My partner and I were comfortably seated and served tea immediately. Take note of the tea! I asked and forgot what it was but it had some distinct citrus and herb notes and I loved it! We tried the Crispy Roast Pork on Rice and this made me weak in the knees. Tender and fatty with cracking skin, my utmost expectations were immediately fulfilled! We also had a Two BBQ Items on Rice combo with duck and barbecue pork. My partner who is a little pickier than I and sometimes does not care for duck enjoyed it very much. The duck was an excellent crispy golden color and very tender and succulent and not fatty and the pork was sweet and delicious also. Finally, we had the Soy Sauce Chicken Feet. This was a cold appetizer and a bit more of a challenge to eat than the dim sum type phoenix talons that we are used to but it was so tasty that we did not mind the effort. As always, we had too much food to eat (ordering too much is apparently what I do) but our server graciously packed it for us to go. This is a sharp looking little place evoking old Chinatown. It is decorated with some historic photos, nice green wood accents and comfortable seating. And reasonable prices also! There is no reason not to support this place and I look forward to Carol Lee’s next project which is to restore Foo’s Ho Ho just down the block! yeswereeatingagain.com
The moment we walked in the door we knew this place was a winner. The heady aroma of anise and clove, crispy skinned ducks hanging over succulent pork and a guy with a cleaver. It’s basic, bbq meat served over rice with some greens smoothed in oyster sauce. Kind of like the menu at In-n-Out burger. Stuart and I shared the duck and bbq pork platter. The duck was too die for. The pork was sweeter than we were used to but still tasty. All up $20 for dinner for two. Will we be back? You betcha!24 hr update: No migraine
Went here on a Friday evening. There weren’t many people. We got a plate with three meats- soy chicken, duck and Roasted pork. They came on top of rice. All the three meats were well cooked and very flavorful. The soy chicken came with a gingery sauce which was our favorite. The Roasted pork skin was so crispy. Duck was our least favorite of the three as it didn’t have a lot of meat but it was still good and flavor full, you could taste the orange in the duck. Overall good chinease BBQ experience.Would have been nicer if the foods came out hot, but it seems like they dont make it to order. 🙂 foodiemuggles.com
