– Fairly high price for small portions- What they claimed to be one of the best dishes on the menu (Cultivated mushrooms) was really only very mediocre…wouldnt pay $15 for a fistful of mushrooms- Good service, funny waitersRates will be /5 and based on food quality only Dishes:Cultivated Mushrooms $15^- Subtly sweet squash puree- Mushrooms were well salted, but not really seasoned with much else 3.6/5Fried Chicken Wings $14- Very ordinary chicken wings, moderately juicy3.8/5Pork Belly Rice Bowl $20- These rice bowls were hands down the best thing on the menu (or at least among what we ordered) both for its quality and price- Huge chunk of pork belly as wide as the bowl – Very succulent cut- Big enough portion for one/two 5/5Foie Gras Rice Bowl $27- Foie gras that doesnt even foie gras but in the BEST way – Super juicy to the point that juice/fat trickles out by the bite- Tastes more like fat but in a good way- Generous portion of foie gras on rice5/5Sablefish $37- The size of a hand- Light miso flavour- Very lightly seasoned, could do with more salt- Well seared and soft & juicy on the inside4/5Mussels $21- Mix of plump and small mussels- Very very fresh such that the taste of the ocean is very much present- Flavourful yet gentle broth 4.4/5Beef Striploin $36- Sauce was weird and I didnt feel like it went with the steak- Taro stack was very buttery + cooked nicely – Cut if the steak was excellent: they didnt ask how well done we wanted it, but it was perfectly medium rare and very very tender- Nothing spectacular and small portion size of steak 3.6/5
In general, Pidgin had a very romantic feel but the food took way to long. From sitting down at our table to paying, we spent at least 3 hours, probably more. The wait time between each course was at least 20 minutes, and it got to the point where we ordered dessert when our main dish arrived because we didn’t want it to take any longer. The food is fusion. We ordered the beef tartare, fried duck wings, udon vongole, beef bavette, and the panna cotta. We enjoyed the beef bavette the most. Full review on my blog. sincerelyloewe.com
Did the 7 course tasting menu (for 2), which is a great way to sample a variety of interesting fusion dishes on a budget!Food: goodAmbiance: excellent, modern and clean and well litService: goodStandout dishes:Beef striploin – this seemed to be cooked sous-vide as it was perfectly medium rare with a good sear all around and very good flavourMantou with eggplant and onion dip – an Asian take on baba ganoush with bread, very delicious bread and rich flavourful spreadDaily Dessert (disassembled yuzu cheesecake) – great flavour and texture combos, although yuzu was very strong in flavourNot so good:Salmon – looked beautiful but was slightly undercooked. Wasn’t sure if it was safe to eat the last bites. Was mentioned to the waitress but no further action or reassurance was made.Burrata – everything about the dish was delicious but the peaches and sauce vastly overpowered the beautiful, simple burrata.
Finally got around to trying Pidgin last month, we enjoyed the tasting menu. Enjoyed the oyster shot thoroughly, burrata cheese was nice but I have had a better one at another nearby Gastown establishment, bayildi was very tasty, salmon was well prepared but wished the skin was crisp, beef striploin with the gochujung sauce was a nice mix.We also added the foie gras rice bowl and it didn’t disappoint.Glad I had tried the restaurant, we found the food was good, service was prompt but at the price point, I would likely head over to one of the other Gastown establishments
Came for dine out 2017 – $40 menu. I’ve only heard negative reviews from friends but with the praise online decided to give it a try. Note on the menu: there were a number of pricey addons – caviar, uni, wagyu beef, etc. for each dish. Felt like a cash grab with no care for the integrity of the dish.I usually do not review each dish, but I’ll make an exception for this visit:1. Daily pickes – carrots, cucumbers, onion. Carrots and cucumber taste like failed attempts to reproduce similar but much more flavourful versions in their native cuisines – each was missing something or had the wrong texture. Onions were too sweet. 1/52. Spicy mentaiko taramasalata, cured yolk, fried mantou bread – very odd flavour combination that, while interesting, doesn’t seem like a good fit together. 2/53. Squash, arugula, fried cauliflower salad with honey and citrus vinaigrette – Light salad, nothing special. Fried cauliflower didn’t work for me but didn’t clash with the rest of the dish. 3/54. Chawanmushi with grated monkfish liver and mushroom – Monkfish liver completely overpowered the rest of the flavours. The egg custard was too light for my taste, it became too watery with the broth/sauce they added. There were enoki mushroom stems hidden in the bottom of the bowl, in such large clumps that it became unpleasant to eat. 1/55. Lingcod, soy brown butter, seasoned rice – the lingcod itself was cooked well enough, butter flavour was a bit overpowering, and the amount of sauce was inadequate. The rice was a complete failure – undercooked, dry, and tasted like it had rice vinegar poured (not mixed) into it with hardly any other seasoning. 2/5 (rice gets a 0)6. Roasted beef tenderloin, braised beef cheek, broccoli – best dish of the night. Tenderloin tasted fine, if a bit over-salted. The beef cheek, while uninteresting, was at least palatable. There was some kind of over-processed broccoli goop on the plate as well (did they add matcha powder?) and I discovered how awful broccoli tastes when it lacks all texture. 3/57. Berry compote, rose blossom meringue, yuzu curd – Way, way too sweet. Could barely taste anything else. 1/5Overall – 2/5 for food, and I’m being very generous. I can see how some folks would be into this sort of food, but l’d never go back, and strongly encourage potential visitors not to waste their time there. Service was standard. Neat decor.
