Went well just nothing stood out, had a decent fruit plate that matched up with my teddy brewskis. Decor was that like a moxies. Service was good.
I had the chicken viet sub with wonton soup. The sub was delicious, the veggies were all super fresh. The soup was a bit salty but pretty good regardless. Definitely will be coming back.
Rockford looks like what happens when a Moxies and a Boston Pizza attempt to conceive, are unable to do so, decide to adopt an Asian kid, then get a divorce, and end up trading weeks where each side forces his or her fashion choices on a confused youth. Being called Rockford, one would imagine this youth would then grow up to be a private detective living out of a mobile home off the beaches of Malibu. What Im saying is that the restaurant seems confusedeither that or its the basis of a 1970s Stephen J. Cannell TV show. Rockford attempts to blend Asian cuisine into a pub-like atmosphere while also trying to emulate a fine dining experience. Its novel. Blending two styles wouldve been commendable. Hell, it might have even worked. Attempting three creates an environment where nearly everything suffers in expense of something else. Its not a particularly good sports bar. Its far too loud for fine dining. I kept rewriting elements of this review trying to lock down what Rockford is about. Its like wandering a modern art museum, believing Ive missed something with everyone else totally engrossed. Are they playing along? Is it only me that cant fall for the illusion and ends up shouting like a nine-year old that I can see the emperors junk. A good example are the bathrooms. Instead of the standard outlets, I was presented with a handful of doors. Rockford placed sinks inside the toilet stalls and created a bunch of small bathrooms instead of two big ones. I agree thats neat but then confusing because they still separated them by gender. Does it matter by this point? And why were the table booths elevated? Do I need a good angle on something? We took our seats a comfortable distance away from the empty bar, under a TV as one would assume, still not far enough away from the speakers, and underneath the largest lampshades I have ever seen. I mean these were enormousI think they were brought in and the restaurant was built around them. We were handed menus, a single page with a moderate selection for a privately owned restaurant, though shockingly limited for a franchise. The options were split confusingly into Its Good to Share, Fresh Outlook, Hand Held Happiness, Wok with Style andsighyeah, its trying to be cute. I get it. I dont generally mind when a restaurant breaks from tradition, but if not careful, it can be like a visit to ICBC. Suddenly, Im required to bring along an Enigma device to figure out what constitutes an appetizer or a full-fledged meal (don’t think to check the price, because everything is expensive).Regardless, we started with the lettuce wraps, with spicy pork and cashew stir-fry, bell peppers and crispy noodles. These werent particularly good. The first problem was the runny filling pooling in the bottom of the bowl. Second, Ive always had a problem with the choice of butter lettuce. Have you tried making a roll with butter lettuce? I havent had to deal with something this limp since listening to Stampede of the Disco Elephants (I know you thought I was going somewhere else with that joke, and you should feel ashamed). I guess it all depends on if youre making tacos or rolls. Butter lettuce cant hold onto much (if you want my opinion, Id use endive). To make matters worse, the leaves were small and couple that with the runny filling, and the whole dish quickly became a salad. As for mains, the girlfriend ordered the lemongrass chicken (chicken skewers with house made teriyaki sauce, papaya salsa, coconut rice, fresh market vegetables), while I opted for the (apparently) Legendary Tokyo Street Noodles (spicy pork ramen with togarashi sesame broth, shitake mushroom, basil & snow peas). Along with my main, I was given a glass of house wine delivered in a glass that weighed about three pounds. For the lemongrass chicken, my girlfriend was not impressed. Ive always felt coconut rice should carry a hint of fragrance and flavor, not be sprinkled with shredded coconut so you taste nothing else. Couple that with an almost total lack of seasoning, and my girlfriend was forced to take it back and ask for regular rice. My street food fared considerably better. My feelings regarding a soup as a full meal depends on at what point Im eating one. Take pho for example, I love it, cant wait to have it, but I dont enjoy pho as much as I survive pho. I order a bowl so large it has an undertow, and by the end, Im staring down at a cup of tepid broth I have no encouragement to spoon up. But thisthis wasn’t bad. A modest bowl loaded with noodles. By the end, I was satisfied with a dry bowl. Also worthy of praise was the service, quick to correct our issues. In the end, Rockford wasnt a terrible experience, just a mediocre one. Given the lack of interesting Asian cuisine in town, I could see perhaps returning, but its somewhat depressing when wanting something apart from feculence of westernized Chinese fair in town.Food: 2.5/5Service: 4/5Presentation: 2.5/5Value: 3/5Recommendation: 3/5
Service was good and nothing like previous people’s description.Perhaps a little slow on the food coming out but nothing to complain about. Food is fairly decent and only reason why not a 5 is because the prices are a high for the small portions that they serve.Ambiance is nice, food is tasty and the servers are pleasant.
Vastly improved!. The Rockford got off to a slow start but they have ironed out the kinks and have gained momentum. It now has great food, amazing service and the prices are no different than anywhere else. I recommend this place.
I had a ceasar salad with blackened chicken and a Pepper Steak, = 41$. My Steak was warm the mashed Potato cold like the uncooked vegetable. A al dente bite on Vegies is nice… But uncooked? Potion is small. Still hungry.
Not the worst place, but…. The atmosphere is nice, and feels comfy, but the service was horrible, and the food only slightly better than the service, especially considering the price. I tried it, but will not be going back. My rating is a 3 out of 10.
