They have a variety of soup to choose from, so I think there is something for everyone: 4 everyday soups and 4 soup of the day soups. I got a beef soup from the soup of the day menu and it was nice and hearty, just what I would expect from a bowl of soup. Noting especially stood out unfortunately. I would come here again but I’d bring my own saltine crackers. As it’s name, I expected salted crackers to be the star of this place. However, they were rather disappointing to me. Unlike the original square saltine crackers, the ones here had a different texture, kinda like tortilla chips, and super salted. It didn’t really go well with the soup that I ordered and I think I would much prefer the original premium saltine crackers. secondspls.blogspot.com
Bland. Bland soup (clam chowder tastes and looks exactly the same as the beef and barley… Same tasteless stock with a few different ingredients chucked in?), crackers tasted like baked paper mch paste, sandwiches were OK but nothing better than you could whip up at home with a nice loaf of bread and some cheese. Nice idea but poor execution. Would not recommend
You are greeted as soon as you walk in by a very friendly, quirky, and fun staff. The atmosphere is very positive and the food is simply awesome! I had the clam chowder and the Mac and cheese sandwich with pulled pork. Their crackers are homemade! I would definitely recommend this little restaurant and I will definitely be back again!
Prince Gastronome. There are drives that feel longer than they should be, like racing a pregnant wife to the hospital. Im not trying to compare the emotions involved, but heading home from the Salted Cracker with a full bag of food certainly felt like an action scene in a Zack Snyder movie. The wafting smells taunted me like the Frenchman from Holy Grail. Im rarely given the opportunity to review a restaurant so pristine upon the world. The Salted Cracked is still drenched in afterbirth. Its cash registers have yet to arrive; its walls are bare. It was technically their soft open with theirI assumehard open due the next day. I had no expectations walking in. I wouldnt have bothered with an official review if it lacked seats. I found three tables, good enoughits a restaurant. The Salted Cracker is a classic soup & sandwich joint, one of many, the majority of which honestly only care about pandering to the desperately hungry. Im not going to lie, about half the lunch-stops Ive reviewed have been depressinglackluster food with the only saving grace being expedience and perhaps free Wi-Fi. The ultimate uncertainty is whether or not its better than Tim Hortons. Because like family diners and pizza joints, having to compete with Dennys and Boston Pizza respectfully, a privately owned food bar must at least be able to match the quality and speed of that iconic Canadian benchmark. I dont know if the Salted Cracker serves coffee, and I certainly didnt see any donuts, but in the field of soup and sandwiches, it stomps on Tim Hortons like a dragon in Skyrim. Granted, this is based on one meal, and my presence as a food critic was identified. So how could I verify the quality of The Salted Cracker? Simple. They make their own crackers.They. Make. Their. Own. Crackers.Ive often complained about restaurants phoning it in, bringing in ready-made meals or more specifically, plastic-wrapped saltines. When I saw the irregular shaped homemade crackers nestled in an envelope, I was as excited as a child discovering Halloween (wait, whos giving out free candy?). It helped that the soup and sandwich flanking said crackers were amazing as well. I appreciated the utter lack of traditional clichs of food bars. The lunch options hung on clipboards, not beaming in comic sans from an illuminated menu board. There were no TVs, no plastic…well…anything. And all of it sans bottled drinks were made in house, the crackers, the cookies, the canned salads. The soup, the tangy Thai, was properly faithful, even to the extent to the slightly indigestible strands of lemongrass. The sandwich, a compressed singularity of cheese and meatloaf, could satisfy anyone. The Salted Crackers location pits them against a Tim Hortons a block away, DLanos in the opposite direction. Theres a Wendys, a White Spot, all walking distance. Against that competition, I hope the best for the Salted Cracker. Theres a legitimate enthusiasm with the staff and owner. The food is great with reasonable prices. I finished typing this review as I finished the meal. I looked about my empty table and became awash with melancholyfondly remembering when I had food from the Salted Cracker. Hopefully, it wont be much longer until dreams become reality.Oh, and one other point, I really appreciated the utter lack of pandering to health nuts. At no point, did the words gluten-free, lactose-free, soy or vegan waft from the owners mouth. And they totally have to start selling those crackers in packages. Just saying.Food: 4/5Service: 5/5Presentation: 4/5Value: 5/5Recommendation: 4.5/5(This score is in relation to other lunch spots, not bistros or high-end restaurants.)
