Odd old-school eatery. Rix is in an isolated administrative-type building way out at the end of the BCIT campus. It’s an odd food-service op. For a low-volume lunch counter, Rix has more old heavy-duty equipment than you’d expect. There’s an industrial iron gas stove, hulking Nuova Simonelli espresso machine and stainless steel steam table, among other things. But there are also modern touches such as a serve-yourself station for pre-made soups. I reckon it’s a good set-up for training future kitchen jockeys from the tech school.Bless her heart, the hair-netted school-age girl at the counter tried hard to make the medium cappucino I ordered. I don’t think Rix gets much call for that, because she had to struggle to figure out the proper proportions of coffee, milk, etc. It took her an inordinately long time. The coffee tasted like it was at the interface between brewed and espressed. I don’t mean that in a complimentary way. But the baristaschooler did her best. I’ll grade her on her curves…
