Not Vancouver standard, but Golden City is the BEST Chinese restaurant in Victoria for dim sum and dinner. Very authentic, unless you want something like lemon chicken balls (which I think, they do have, but why?!!).
This is our favourite Chinese restaurant in Victoria, and we have eaten at nearly every one over the years. The food always tastes fresh. Dim sum here is the best in town at the moment, but we also do evening dinners and have never had a bad meal. If you are looking for the traditional dim sum experience of crowds and carts, you’ll need to go elsewhere (Don Mee, for example), but if you are interested in high quality food, Golden City is the place.
The food was quite tasty but a little expensive, around 17-20 dollars per plate. Service was a little slow, brought out one dish at a time every 5 minutes so it was kind of hard to eat everything together. I also had to remind the waiter twice about drinks and steamed rice.
Bear in Victoria. The only good Chinese restaurant in Victoria. I’ve had some off experiences here but always overall good to excellent. Dim sum is good and large scale dinners. Staff are very nice.
Great Dim Sum Experience. I have only great things to say! We came to this restaurant on Christmas Day with no reservation and were seated immediately. The host was VERY helpful in guiding us how and what to order since we were not experienced at all with dim sum, Everything we received was delicious! When we finally went to pay, I found the bill was quite reasonable and have no complaints. I would certainly return!
Need a loan to eat here. Could not believe the prices!! Fried rice for $17. Many other dishes $16-18 EACH! Dinner for 2… cantonese chow mein, ginger beef and deep fried shrimp…$59 including tip. Plus the food was terrible. Shrimp were very greasy. Ginger beef was so overcooked the beef was crispy, not the coating, the beef! Stay away from this one. We cannot understand how they feel they can charge such exorbitant prices for sub par food.
Excellent Service and Food. My family and I enjoyed a lovely meal at Golden City on Thanksgiving weekend. I think we’ve found our new favorite Chinese food restaurant! We were greeted warmly at the door and brought to our table. Our server was incredibly knowledgeable about the menu, and every question we asked he was able to answer promptly. His English wasn’t stellar, but we didn’t have any trouble communicating. He was able to assist us in picking out an assortment of varied dishes without being too pushy or impatient with our lack of familiarity with the menu. He seemed to want to ensure we had a lovely experience. In addition to our main server, there was another gentleman who didn’t speak much English at all, but continued to smoothly and silently wait on our table. He made sure our teapot was always full and hot, and our water glasses were always full. Overall, the service was top-notch.As for the food, we were highly impressed. Every dish came out hot and fresh. None of the food was greasy. The highlight was the Salt and Pepper Squid, which was battered in a crunchy cornmeal and was by far the tenderest, tastiest squid I have every had. We would also recommend the Egg Silk Tofu with Bean Curd; it was tasty dish that was particularly interesting due to a dichotomy of textures between the soft tofu and the crunchy, fried bean curd. I feel most compelled to say that we had two fried dishes, and neither were greasy, at all. The other dishes were excellent, as well: fluffy fried rice, sizzling chicken teppan with peppers and pineapple, Singapore Curry noodle (amazing!), and crisp spring rolls. There wasn’t a single dish that I would complain about. Our family will be returning to Golden City Restaurant, for sure.
