This place is lucky it’s the only salad bar in the Pacific Centre food court. I eat here often, but only for convenience and because so many of the other food court options are not healthy. I find I have to be very selective about the items I take, as many often appear to be past their prime. The avocados are often brown (I try to have a slice every day but haven’t for the past three days as they’ve looked so bad), the soybeans sometimes look questionable (paler green colour, and have the outside skin beginning to fall off…today they looked so bad I was thinking of taking a photo but decided against it), and the fruit is often overripe – pineapple looking soggy and darker yellow than it should, strawberries and raspberries with blemishes (raspberries especially are often mushed together). I have even had bad experiences with the canned items – I no longer take the canned mandarin oranges, as they have tasted fermented on more than one occasion (to the point where I have had to spit them out and then pick the others out of my salad and thrown them out), and even the canned peaches sometimes taste bad. Same with the chickpeas – I’ve started looking at how bubbly the liquid they’re in looks, and if it’s too much, or their skins are falling off, I don’t take them that day. Given my experiences, I would never risk taking something like a hard boiled egg, or chicken (the strange colour of which makes it look almost fake…I actually heard another customer talking last week about how questionable it looked). These problems don’t seem to depend on day of the week, or time of day. I find the lack of quality unacceptable, particularly given how busy this place is. With as much turnover as they seem to have (there is often a line during lunch time), they should be able to maintain a fresh product. I keep hoping things will improve, but they haven’t – and actually seem to be getting worse, which prompted me to finally write this review. I suspect this is not the fault of the ladies who work there, but rather whoever is ordering the product. Please improve things!!
A more healthy alternative to fast food. Being severely deficient in the dietary greens department, I decided that it was about time to make an effort to eat at least one healthy meal. Like most people, I try to avoid salad bars in hopes of not needing to suffer a pointless death due to ‘gustatory boredom’. Alas, this was not the case. There are so many choices regarding how you design your perfect salad! Mine was composed of spinach, lettuce, chicken, shrimp, egg, pine nuts, dried cranberries, noodles, and topped with their Asian sauce. It tasted great and I don’t regret having a salad for lunch. Insalata allows one to fill their stomach with a healthy alternative for a reasonable price.
