When it comes to seafood quality should always come first. My parents used to run a fish shop business in Steveston Village and I had the privilege to eat fresh, wild seafood almost every night. This Smoked Salmon on rye bread is a perfect example of good qualtiy. You can still see that natural oil from salmon with a familiar taste. It was simple yet delicious and worth every dollar. The double shot cappucino was made with love and passion from Mario himself. There was no signs of burnt coffee nor acidic taste. It had a light punch of bursting flavors and a fullfilling aroma. The only downfalls would be that theres not enough power cords nor washrooms in site.

Bad Service. I went to Mario’s with a business associate thinking it would be quieter and more comfortable than Starbucks. I ordered beverages for my college and myself and than the man at the counter said we were not allowed to just order drinks we also had to buy something to eat. I didn’t even realize they served food, and as they are a coffee shop, I didn’t think we had to order a meal to be able to sit down. I go on to say we will only be here for 10-15 mins and we don’t really want to eat, but this didn’t please him. Even though there were three tables available, he told me he would have to ask us to leave if someone else came in, why he would mention this when there are three free tables is beyond me. I eventually told him that I didn’t want what we were ordering as it was an embarrassing situation, especially since this was a business meeting (also we were both wearing suits, so we didn’t look sketchy). After everything he said we could stay, but I thought it was ridiculous and told him I would never go there again. I couldn’t even tell you if there coffee is good, because it wasn’t worth trying.

Sitting in Mario’s right now having a latte for the first time. There is wifi if you ask for their password. Only a small place but the atmosphere really feels like you’re in italy even if its freezing rain outside. The coffee is the best I’ve had in 3years since leaving Australia. The staff are amazing, they greeted me as if they’ve known me for years. They clearly have a regular clientele. As I sit here, there is a non-stop stream of regulars and the staff knew all their names and orders. In a city full of coffee chains, this family business really is a hidden gem who’s regulars would probably want to keep it their delicious secret.

Good Latte, beware the service charges. Mario charges 50 cents per debit transaction. My card failed twice so I paid in cash … and he charged me for the two transaction attempts! Even after admitting that the bank doesnt bill him for failed attempts! He was pretty rude about it too. His employee obviously thought it was stupid but he insisted. It was a good Latte, I might have become a regular morning customer on my way to work … He better cherish that dollar, because it may have cost him hundreds.
