Our venue for a late-lunch/early-dinner during a recent stay in Victoria. I had researched the reviews, and checked it out on a drive-by earlier in our stay — it sounded and looked like our kind of place, and it sure did not disappoint. The Cozy Place is a small Chinese restaurant, clean, neat, and tidy, with very friendly, and welcoming husband and wife owners. We sat at a table near the door, which provided a great view of the restaurant’s interior, and cooking of our order in the kitchen. We arrived about 3 pm, and were given the option of ordering from either the lunch or dinner menus, we opted for the lunch menu (it had a good number of selections, with small descriptions and pictures of the fare offered). We enjoyed the first glass of tea while making up our minds on what to order. What we (a threesome) ordered, and listed in the order received: Note: the dishes were prepared one at a time, and each brought to our table piping hot from the kitchen as prepared, allowing us to fully-savour the distinctive spicing and flavours of each dish.– #07 – deep-fried chicken wings — cooked perfectly – light-crispy outside, soft inside, spicy (not overly so), and tasty. — #25 – cozy place chow mein — the ‘house’ chow mein – vermicelli noodles, bean sprouts, broccoli, carrots, onions, chicken, shrimp, and octopus (and I may have missed something). Good preparation, lightly-spiced, and very flavourful.– #09 – beef brisket & tendon, w/large rice noodles — served in a large bowl – a chicken stock base, with large rice noodles (cooked so well, not overcooked, the noodles had well-absorbed the flavours of the stock and additional spices added to the preparation), large pieces of tender brisket/tendon (melt in your mouth tender goodness!), and pieces of baby bok choy. So good!! colourful, aromatic, and very distinctively flavoured. Tasty, and very much-enjoyed. — #06 – dumplings — steamed and then lightly stir-fried, large, the wraps thin and tender, the insides crammed full of a meat (chicken and pork?) and veggie mix. Another perfect preparation, flavourful, and tasty.– #12 – beef tomato rice — slices of beef, pieces of tomato and onion, on a bed of rice – it looked good, and tasted the same – yum! The beef was tender, and the spicing was perfect to our liking. Another very flavourful and tasty dish. The Cozy Place — wow, what a delightful and much-enjoyed dining experience! Wonderfully-prepared food, with such distinctive and flavourful spicing – colourful presentations – welcoming, friendly hosts and service. From the outside, it looked like it might be our kind of place – from the inside, after enjoying such a great meal, we definitely found out it ‘was’ our kind of place!
Service was amazing, food was all hot and fresh, very clean place- tons of food! Everything was very good. Hot and sour soup was especially good, best I have ever had!
Both owners are very nice and friendly!! We have been there for many times and the kitchen is open area where you can see how it is made from scratch. And you can see that the owners have a big passionate for food and it is No MSG! Which is very rare in most Asian restaurant. It is definitely worth the visit 🙂
Chinese Home Cooking. This restaurant is squeezed between two popular Victoria restaurants ( sura and Green leaf bistro) ..do yourselves a favour and don’t pass by without going in!!! I went in with my family and fell in love instantly. It is an open kitchen concept so you can see the owner/chef cook your food. The owners are a husband and wife team and they are both lovely. You can tell they are proud of what they do when they explain that everything is by scratch and NO MSG is in any of their dishes. The food was just wonderful. Very rare in Victoria can you find authentic home dishes that they make and every dish is made with care. Try their garlic shrimp spring roll, special sweet and sour pork, and honey garlic ribs. If you are daring, go for the special stuff like lamb hot pot and beef tendon and brisket noodle. Whatever you get, you know you’ll leave satisfied.18 Jan, 2015Authenticity in the Heart of Victoria!. Great Authentic Chinese Food that you don’t see in a Victoria! The owner Scott is incredibly nice and it really makes it feel like a Cozy Meal at someone’s house. Try it out! You won’t be disappointed!
Great Authentic Chinese Restaurant (No MSG). I went for dinner at Cozy Place last night with some friends and was thoroughly impressed by the authentic chinese dishes that were offered. The restaurant has an open kitchen that is remarkably clean, just like the rest of the restaurant. The food boasts great flavours that are not often found in chinese restaurants in VIC and it is quite obvious that no MSG is used. It is owned and operated by a very nice couple (front of house and chef) and you can tell that they have a true passion for their cuisine. Do yourself a favor and give it a try, you will not regret it.
Relaxing time with enjoyable dining. Very good Chinese food with reasonable prices and the cider was cheap too!!!!The owners (couple) are very nice and easy to chat with when we want little changes to the menu!!!
Best Chinese Food in Victoria. The vegetables are fresh and crisp, flavoured not with MSG or excessive salt, but with rich, savoury sauces and broths. The meats are perfectly roasted or sauteed, the seasoning here used to enhance and not to cover up the lower-quality cuts other restaurants use. The usual chow mein can be found here, but it is the variety of dishes that keeps me coming back. Both owners are very friendly and eager for feedback.
