The worst service in Chinatown. My friends mother, visiting from France, wanted cake and tea for Mothers day. We walked from the Royal Theatre to Chinatown to find out a completely empty place, no one customer, and to be turned away because we just wanted cake and tea, instead of the full $45 high tea. This is a tea house marked as best in town. What kind of business model is that? Cakes getting old on the shelves, one hour from closing and the place was empty, no wonder why, I would not come back and I wont recommend it.

This is a lovely place for afternoon tea! The service was great, the food was wonderful and I just loved how you could get more then one kind of tea, so we tried them all! It’s a great place to go for a great vegetarian afternoon tea.

Venus Sophia is an absolute gem, they have been a staple in chinatown for I think 6 years or a little more. Since I have been coming here way back I’m always amazed how much better and popular they get with each visit. The whole menu changes seasonally and is made from scratch with organic local produce, you can feel the freshness of the food. Come here for lunch or afternoon tea, it’s well worth it with the pretty presentation and mixed vintage china. Although they moved to table service a while ago they still happily welcome folks looking for a light dessert or a coffee. Superb service, truly marvellous decor with understated elegance. I recommend you go there soon and you should be making reservations as they are usually busy. Bravo to the hardworking owners for creating and maintaining such an authentic restaurant!

We were visiting Victoria for the weekend and wanted to try a new tea place. Venus came highly recommended by the concierge at the Delta hotel and we were not disappointed. The decor is really, really beautiful with a spacious dining room inside supplemented by a cozy cafe at the entrance for if you just want a quick snack or drink to go. We tried their homemade quiche with a super fresh cut salad, yummy soup if the day (we’re told their the best) and a lovely high tea. Really happy we visited and highly recommend.

To sum it up great service, great food and great atmosphere. This was a wonderful experience. We came in with no reservations for afternoon tea and were warmly welcomed by the staff. The service was very attentive and friendly. The afternoon tea was more food than the two of could eat at once so we were glad the staff offered us to take the rest home. The leftovers were still wonderful the next day. Everything was tasty and interesting. The Earl Grey tea had a wonderful bergamot flavor better than any I’ve had before and I loved it. Again, staff explained they sell all their loose teas so I took a tin home too. Also loved the spinach spiced soup on a chilly day.

After reading the reviews, I was really looking forward to having tea there. Cozy atmosphere, good location. I just don’t know what happened the day we went. It’s as if we were in a totally different restaurant. We started with sandwiches that were dry on the outside. They had obviously been made way ahead of time and had not been kept covered. They did not look delicate, but hardy breadwise and skimpy on the fillings. Amid the sandwiches was the smallest quiche I’ve ever seen….about the size of a toonie. It was delicious, but unbelievably tiny. The jam and cream to go with the scones were each a teaspoon-full in size (no exaggeration, and this was for 2 people!) To cap things off, our server gave the impression that she did not want to be there. She had her spiel memorized and delivered it with no enthusiasm whatsoever. Being able to try the different teas was great and they do have a wonderful selection. Maybe we just hit a bad day, but for $28 each, not including tax and tip, we left very disappointed.

Great food, service with an additude. Everything about Venus Sophia is perfect- except the staff. The decor is perfect, the atmosphere is cozy and pretty, the food is delicious and creative. However, the staff made me feel very unwelcome. I visit fairly regularly for coffee and macaroons, and I know I’m a familiar face. Yet I’m consistently greeted with sour looks and little respect, to the point where I no longer tip (I’ve worked in food service- it takes a lot before I stop tipping entirely). Poor service aside, it’s a great place for tea and sweets.10 May, 2015Good food, service with an additude. Everything about Venus Sophia is perfect- except the staff.
